Remote Learning – PSHE

27th January 2021S Robson

We have seen lots of fabulous examples of Health, Wellbeing and Relationships work across school, from our pupils engaged in remote learning and those pupils in school.

Some pupils in KS1 have been practising mindfulness by joining in with online story yoga, and also learning about what makes them special. Others have been learning about money, and having an awareness of saving money for something they need or would like.

In KS2, some classes have been thinking about what makes them happy, and their thoughts on this are all very unique. Researching issues facing cocoa farmers in Ghana and how organisations like Fairtrade are trying to improve working conditions and environment, has produced some interesting debate from some classes. Other pupils have created very informative posters based upon their awareness of basic first aid to do with nose bleeds.

Our Year 6 pupils have been looking at careers and potential jobs for the future, discussing  things that might lead them to choose a certain job or career.

Fantastic!

Good Morning Y3, Today we will be moving on to looking at money. We will be counting in pence.

Starter: Use TopMarks game to give the shop keeper the exact amount using coins. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money

Video: Watch the video link going through the different coins we use and comparing amounts.

Activity: Add up the coins on the worksheet and write your answers in the boxes. Work your way through the pence activities moving onto comparing amounts and solving problems.

English
Beowulf follows the same structure as conventional hero myths, where a hero needs to defeat a monster. As the hero gets closer the monster, the tension builds and it begins to look like the hero may not survive, but at the last minute the hero finds strength and overcomes the monster. Today we are going to look at how the author builds tension in the story Beowulf. Watch the video lesson on your Google Classroom before you begin. The video cuts off at the end when Miss Whitehead is explaining your task (technical error- sorry!) so make sure you read exactly what you need to do below.

Your Task
Use the diagram below to help you create a tension mountain. You need to decide where on the diagram each of the cards at the bottom would go to show how tension builds up. If you can’t print this sheet out that’s absolutely fine- you can draw the diagram on a piece of paper and write the events.

Extension
Authors build tension is to vary their sentence length, by mixing long sentences filled with description with shorter sentences, usually with action or important details in them. Listen to Miss Whitehead reading chapter 7 again. Can you spot how longer sentences and shorter sentences work together to build tension?

History
Hadrian ruled as the Roman emperor between 117-138CE. Instead of continuing the expansion of the empire he decided to work on securing the empire’s boundaries. There were several places where the borders were vulnerable to attack. He built Hadrian’s wall to keep the Scottish barbarian tribes out! Today we are going to learn all about Hadrian’s wall and explore artefacts found on a local site…

To begin your lesson, use the PowerPoint and then follow the link below to explore further!
https://arbeiaromanfort.org.uk/learning/crafty-romans-from-home-pier-stone

Your task!
Using items you can find around the house build a pillar. Try it with a friend or family member. Have a race to see who can build the tallest, strongest, or widest. You can use blocks, lego, toilet rolls, paper tubes, rolled paper, books, etc. Let your imagination run wild!

We would love to see your creations! Send them to us at [email protected]

Maths
Good Morning Y3 and welcome back to home learning week 3! Can you believe how fast this time is flying over – we certainly can’t!

Today will be our last day on Multiplication and Division – We will be looking at how many ways we can represent a calculation by using concrete resources to help us.

Starter: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button Division Hit the Button!

Video: Watch the video link and see how many ways you can represent a calculation – keep stopping the video when you are asked to work out a question – use scrap paper to help you jot down your working out.

Worksheet: Complete the worksheet below working out how many different ways you can represent the calculation.

English
Today our literacy lesson has a reading focus, we will be making predictions! Can you remember what a prediction is? Watch the video lesson on your Google Classroom to find out. Don’t forget to have your pencil and paper ready before you begin.

Your task
Write a paragraph (4 or 5 sentences) to predict what you think will happen at the end of the Beowulf story. Don’t forget to use conjunctions in your work to extend your sentences and give lots of detail to your predictions.

Challenge!
Can you justify your prediction?
E.g I predict this because Beowulf is brave and strong, he is the hero and the hero almost always survives.

In our google meet this afternoon, we will be reading the end of the story so you can see if your prediction was correct!

Science
This is the final lesson of our animals including humans topic- well done for producing some fabulous work over the past few weeks!

Starter: Can you match the common bone names with the scientific bone names (how many have you remembered from last lesson?)

Main Activity: You are going to researching in today’s lesson. Your task is to choose 3 major skeletal muscle pairs and research where each of the muscles are in the body and find out what their function is. You can record your research on a piece of paper- make sure this is your best handwriting!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zqm8q6f
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/znntsbk

Here is an example:
The biceps are muscles on the front part of the upper arm. Biceps bend the forearm and are used in lifting and pulling movements.

Challenge: Miss Samuels has been running. Can you name the muscles, in her body, that have been used? (Hint: There are three muscles)

Good Morning Y3!

Maths
Starter: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/arithmetic/latest/arithmetic_en.html Have a go at different multiplication and division calculations by playing on top marks arithmetic game!

Today we will be dividing 100 into equal parts of 2,4,5 and 10.

Video and Task: Watch the learning video and keep pausing to complete the tasks set for you throughout the video – remember to write down your answers for each question – you can then take a photo and upload to your assigned task or email to [email protected].

English
You all produced some excellent plans yesterday, thank you for sharing them with us! I have stolen some of your fabulous ideas to help me in today’s video lesson on your Google Classroom.

Your task today is to use your plan to write a character description. Now remember, you are focusing on Grendel’s appearance, personality and movements. You included lots of adjectives, adverbs in similes in your plans yesterday- make sure you use those today! Try to use a range of different sentence openers- the word mat attached below will help you with some ideas.

Good luck and don’t forget to share your work with us! 🙂

History
Today in our history lesson you are going to investigate the story of a famous character called Boudica who lived in Britain around the time of the Roman invasion. Good historians act like detectives by looking for clues about the past in ‘sources’ of information. Today you are all going to be true historians! Use the PowerPoint link on your Google Classroom to start today’s lesson, during the PowerPoint you have the option to read the story from the slides or follow the link on the slide to listen to it. There are other links below that you can also explore- I know you will all enjoy the Bolshy Boudica Song from Horrible Histories.

Your task!
You are going to create a story board depicting the main events of the Boudica’s story. There is a worksheet attached below, if you have access to a printer you might want to print this off and create your story board on there. If not you could split your page into different sections by folding it.

We are still looking for some fabulous work to go onto our brand new History display in our corridor. So don’t forget to send your work to [email protected] because yours could be picked!

Art

For our new art project meet David Hockney.

• Hockney is a British born, contemporary artist.
• He was born in Bradford, England, in 1937.
• He experimented with a variety of styles over sixty years including paint, photography and digital media.
• His work includes portraits and still-life, but also landscape painting.

After living in America, Hockney returned to England in the late 1990s. Living in Yorkshire, he admired the landscapes around him for their subtlety of colour. His painting became focused on colour, shape, pattern and texture.
Some aspects of a picture will be flat and without tone, but in other parts, Hockney uses brush strokes or dashes and dabs.
Take a look at a landscape painting by David Hockney. What do you think of it?

Activity 1 – Open to document below to see your activity for today. You can use paints, pastels or watercolours.

Year 3 are Historians at Home!

13th January 2021C Whitehead

Year 3 have started their new history topic- The Romans!

Historians believe that Rome was founded in 753 BC. In our first lesson, we thought about when this time fits into the bigger picture of world history. We learnt that although the Roman Empire had its beginnings in the city of Rome, over time it expanded its rule to include many other countries. But how?

We found out that one of the main reasons the Roman Empire was able to expand so greatly was the power of its army! We undertook online research to gather information all about life in the Roman Army.  Take a look!

We know that many different tribes of people inhabited Britain during the Iron Age. Meanwhile, the Roman Empire had been expanding across Europe. The Romans had heard about Britain, which they called Britannia, and Caesar began to think about invading.

We soon discovered that it took more than one attempt before the Romans were successful in their efforts to invade Britannia.

We then imagined that we were all Celts in Britain at the time of Claudius’ invasion. We had heard about the impending invasion and within our tribes, we had to decide whether or not to fight back against the attacking Romans! We made a list of arguments for and against fighting back again. Take a look at our reasons below!

We have really enjoyed learning about the Romans so far. We wonder what we will learn next…
