Our school competed against other schools in South Tyneside at the start of February. For one week, we played on Times Tables Rock Stars trying to gain the most answers correct, both individually and as a school. We were extremely successful! Our school were the winners, scoring the highest most accurate answers, as well as 3 of our children being the top scorers in the competition. We are so proud of everyone who joined in and helped us with this achievement. Fantastic!
Year 2 have been working so hard at home and we have been amazed with the fantastic work they have been sending in.
English
In English, children started off the term learning about China. They have been writing and performing poems about Chinese dragon’s dancing in the New Year parade. They practised reading their poems aloud, speaking clearly and using sound effects and actions.
Here are a few of the brilliant performances:
The children used the facts they learned about China to write some wonderful information texts.

Look at all of the marvellous multiplication that the children have been doing, investigating how many equal groups there are and how many objects are in each group:

Here is even more fantastic work that year 2 have been doing, we are so proud of them!
We’d like you to look at o-e phone home. This sound has been sent home already so you can read the words and look at the sound card. There’s also a video to support your learning:
As an extra challenge, try writing down the o-e words. Don’t forget to use Fred fingers to help you sound words out.
English
For English, we would like you to complete the activities on pages 4 and 5 which focus on noun phrases. This is building on yesterday’s work about nouns and adjectives. We have also used noun phrases in school when writing setting and character descriptions.
Maths
Today’s activities on pages 4 and 5 are further practice using a number line to add and subtract.
United against bullying
The theme for this year’s anti-bullying week is United Against Bullying. Watch the video to find out more information.
In your learning pack there is a jigsaw piece for you to write a pledge, something you will do to help stop bullying. On the jigsaw piece write your sentence which could be:
My class chooses to unite against bullying/name calling/bullying so I will…
Then explain what you will do play your part such as treating everyone with respect or tell a teacher if you hear someone saying something unkind.
You can then decorate your puzzle piece to make it stand out.
We love seeing the work you have been doing so remember to send it in to year2@hartonprimary.co.uk.
We hope you are all well. Here are your home learning tasks for today:
Phonics
We always start the day with phonics, last Friday we sent home the sound u-e huge brute. Read over the sound cards and look at the rhymes to help you remember that the best friends u-e and how the e changes the sound of the u. Now practise reading the words for each sounds, remember to spot the special friend and best friends!
Here is a link to Ruth Miskin online which will support your learning.
Challenge the children to spell and write the words using the correct sounds. There are plenty of useful videos available on the Ruth Miskin Youtube channel.
English
Using the English Activity workbook complete pages 2 and 3 which is looking at nouns and adjectives.
As an extra challenge, children could write a sentence using two adjectives and a noun to describe a favourite character from a story, a film or even their pet. Remember to try and use a comma in a list of adjectives.
Maths
For maths, complete pages 2 and 3 in your addition and subtraction activity book which is practising adding and subtracting using pictures. Following this, children could login to Numbots for more number practice.
Odd Socks day
This week is anti-bullying week, we kick started with odd socks day to celebrate everyone being different and unique. We’d love you to design your own pair of odd socks for the school competition using the sheet included in your pack. Send any entries to year2@hartonprimary.co.uk
Here is a link to a virtual odd socks assembly for more information. We hope you have a great day.
