English
Beowulf follows the same structure as conventional hero myths, where a hero needs to defeat a monster. As the hero gets closer the monster, the tension builds and it begins to look like the hero may not survive, but at the last minute the hero finds strength and overcomes the monster. Today we are going to look at how the author builds tension in the story Beowulf. Watch the video lesson on your Google Classroom before you begin. The video cuts off at the end when Miss Whitehead is explaining your task (technical error- sorry!) so make sure you read exactly what you need to do below.

Your Task
Use the diagram below to help you create a tension mountain. You need to decide where on the diagram each of the cards at the bottom would go to show how tension builds up. If you can’t print this sheet out that’s absolutely fine- you can draw the diagram on a piece of paper and write the events.

Extension
Authors build tension is to vary their sentence length, by mixing long sentences filled with description with shorter sentences, usually with action or important details in them. Listen to Miss Whitehead reading chapter 7 again. Can you spot how longer sentences and shorter sentences work together to build tension?

History
Hadrian ruled as the Roman emperor between 117-138CE. Instead of continuing the expansion of the empire he decided to work on securing the empire’s boundaries. There were several places where the borders were vulnerable to attack. He built Hadrian’s wall to keep the Scottish barbarian tribes out! Today we are going to learn all about Hadrian’s wall and explore artefacts found on a local site…

Your task!
Using items you can find around the house build a pillar. Try it with a friend or family member. Have a race to see who can build the tallest, strongest, or widest. You can use blocks, lego, toilet rolls, paper tubes, rolled paper, books, etc. Let your imagination run wild!

We would love to see your creations! Send them to us at [email protected]
