Books for Topics have been on a mission to dig out the best books to look forward to!

Their team has been taking a look at some of the new middle-grade titles (ages 8-12) coming up this term. They’ve picked out ten top recommendations to watch out for from January to April 2022.

Anti-Bullying Week 2021

11th November 2021Ms C Smith

Anti-Bullying Week is coordinated In England and Wales by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and takes place from 15 to 19 November 2021 and it has the theme One Kind Word. The week will begin with Odd Socks Day on Monday 15th.

Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us. This is one of the reasons, that ‘One Kind Word’ has been chosen as the theme of Anti-Bullying Week taking place from 15 to 19 of November 2021.

At Harton Primary, we will be embracing the ‘One Kind Word’ theme and celebrating the week with a range of activities. We are looking forward to a kindness filled week.

Helping to decide appropriate content – movies, TV, games and books

7th October 2021L Forster

It has become apparent that children are playing games on the yard inspired by the new Netflix show ‘Squid Game‘ – rated 15. While the games the children are playing at school have not currently caused concern (mainly chasing, tag type games), the content of the programme may not be age appropriate.

To help gauge if content (movies, TV shows, video games, books, etc) is appropriate, the website Common Sense Media is a great place to help. It gives reviews from both parents and children about what age they think the content is best suited for and gives reasons for their opinions.

‘TikTok’ and ‘Screen Zombies’ Newsletters

12th March 2021L Forster
Students have quite probably spent a lot of time online and you might have concerns about the impact of screen time.  I’ve attached a leaflet from the National Online Safety Centre on that subject – trying to avoid the children becoming ‘Screen Zombies’.

Download (PDF, 1.38MB)

Also attached is a a PDF with some information about TIkTok – which has an age restriction of 12+. We are aware that a number of children are using this app, but stress that they should be careful and follow the E-Safety teachings they have learned in Computing lessons and KidSafe courses.  The leaflet is for is a guide for parents regarding the app and offers some advice to help monitor and keep their children safe.

Remote Learning – Y6

5th January 2021D Fawkes

Hi everyone,
We hope you’re fit, well and have had a wonderful Christmas. We’re all really disappointed that we aren’t welcoming you back today but we just wanted to get in touch and let you know how the remote learning will look in Year 6 while we’re locked down.

We are looking to retain as much of the typical school-day structure as possible so lessons will begin at 9am. Teachers will be available live via Google Classroom at various points in the day – some content is pre-recorded so that children can watch and re-watch it to support their learning. The work will be assigned using the ‘Year 6’ class on Google Classroom, which has newly been set up. Children should login and accept.

9am – Live check-in with a teacher.
9:05-9:45 – Watch the pre-recorded maths video and complete the work.
9:45-10:15 – Live check-in with the teacher who will answer any questions, help anyone who got stuck and go through the answers, to review the maths work.
10:15-10:45 – Reading activity to be specified by teacher (Reading Plus, Accelerated Reader or Reading Comprehension)
10:45-11:00 – BREAK
11:00-11:45 – Watch the pre-recorded English video and complete the work.
11:45-12:00 – Live check-in with teacher to review English work.
12:00-1:30 Lunch/break/free time.
1:30- 2:15 – Watch the pre-recorded topic lesson and complete the work.
2:15-2:30 – Live check-in with teacher to review topic work.
2:30-3:00 – Independent activity to be assigned each day (teacher reading a class
text, Times Table Rock Stars, Numbots, handwriting exercise etc.)

For those who are sharing devices or are unable to attend at the specific times, all the videos including the live sessions will be recorded and uploaded so should be available to access all of the content at any point in the day.

When you complete your work, please take a photo and send it to us at [email protected] if you can and contact us if you need any help.

The children will need access to their online passwords, most importantly their Google Classroom logins, to access the work. These have already been sent home with the children, but if you need them please contact us as soon as you can.

Stay safe!

Sincerely,
Mrs Fawkes, Mrs Whitfield and Mr Dawson.

Buddy Bench Update

4th September 2020S Robson

During the holidays two of our Buddy Benches were taken from the school grounds. Many hours went into recreating our pupils fabulous designs and we envisage that there will be some disappointment at their loss when school reopens. The benches will be difficult to replace.

If you have any information as to their whereabouts, please contact the school office.

Thank you!
