Some of our Year 1 pupils were having fun in the allotment yesterday. They enjoyed using the gardening tools to tidy the raised beds. Next week they should be ready to plant some bulbs for the Spring.

Over the last few weeks, the children have been finding out about Remembrance Day. They have been learning about why Remembrance Day is important and why it is commemorated. Each child made their own poppy. The poppies were displayed on the classroom window. Here are some photo of our lovely displays.
Well done to the children who participated in October’s Reading Challenge.
Children in EYFS shared a book about their favourite TV character.
Children in Key Stage 1 read aloud to their pet or favourite soft toy.
Children in Key Stage 2 read a magazine or a news article.
Year 1 enjoyed working outside and around our school grounds to learn more about using a map. We looked at a compass and practised finding North. We then played games to help us remember different directions. We particularly enjoyed our game of Bingo,
where we had to identify different symbols used on a map.

In English we have been reading Non-Fiction texts and writing our own ‘All about Owls’ fact books. Year 1 were so excited to have a visit from two beautiful Owls yesterday to help us learn even more about these amazing birds.
Did you know Owls actually have very long legs?
Our favourite part was seeing the Owls beautiful big eyes and finding out about how they use them for hunting!
Friday saw an amazing collection of toiletries, canned and dried foods being brought into school for The South Tyneside Food Bank. Our last Canny Friday is this week (23rd October). We can’t wait to see how many donations we manage to raise for such a worthy cause.
Morning everyone. Thanks for all of your help and support with home learning over the past few weeks. We cannot wait to welcome the children back to school tomorrow Wednesday 14th October.
English
For today’s activity, we would like to challenge the children to write some sentences to describe someone important in their family who has helped them with their home learning.
Children should write 2-3 sentences and try to use adjectives to describe e.g kind, caring, helpful.
Phonics
Watch the video to recap the sounds with your child. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6OiU2h3sUI
Please read the following with your children. They should read each sound, green words and red words. This will help the children to read the short text.
Maths
Children have been learning to use the language ‘equal to’, ‘more’, ‘less’, ‘greater than’, ‘fewer than’ and ‘less than’ to compare groups of objects. Today’s activity sheet is titled ‘Compare objects.’ Take a look at the video: https://vimeo.com/456848546

Geography
In Geography we have been learning about our local area. Today we would like to compare our old school with our new school. Look at the photographs and see how it has changed.
Here are some photographs of school, old and new:
Task: Our school looks very different today. Find one thing that is the same and one thing that is different. Write a sentence about what you have found out.
Don’t forget to send photographs of any completed activities to [email protected]

Phonics and Reading
Today we would like you to revisit the sound ‘qu’. Use the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2mcW0TVK5E to remind children of the sound. Challenge the children to spell words with the qu sound in. For example qu-i-t, qu-i-z etc.
You will find useful phonics videos on Ruth Miskin youtube channel.
Please log on to Reading eggs by following the instructions in your pack, and the log in details you have been given.
Maths
Today’s activity is to complete the worksheet – ‘One-to-one correspondence’ – where children will match one object with another. Take a look at the video: https://vimeo.com/456847942

Science
Our senses help us to understand the world around us. The five senses include Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste. Each of our senses send messages to our brain.
Write a sentence about each of your senses.
I can see, I can hear, I can smell, I can feel and I can taste.
