Wow! What a week in Year 1!

29th January 2021Emma Adams

We are so proud of all of our children (and grown-ups!) for working so hard on their home learning tasks! This week, we’ve been working on poetry and numbers to 20. We’ve tested materials, made Victorian toys and even designed and made our own biscuits. Our Friday challenge was to tell/show our grown up that we care about them. One way we did this was by making cards and helping with chores!

Friday 29th January – Year 1 Home Learning

29th January 2021Emma Adams

Hello everyone,

Please see below for today’s home learning tasks. Please note that all of our teaching videos and resources will be available on Google Classroom from 8am.

*Phonics links will be posted after 9.30am*

Literacy

For today’s Literacy lesson we will work on pages 24-25 in our English Activity Booklet – ‘rhymes’. See the picture below. You’ll find this book within your work pack that has been delivered this week.

Maths

Today brings us to the end of our place value topic – next week we will start work on adding and subtracting numbers to 20.  You will also find an ‘extension’ task on Google Classroom – by no means is this a must, just if you feel it would be helpful. For today, this is a summary of questions from the unit – a bit like a mini assessment, but nothing to worry about – you might just pick and choose some questions to try.

History

Today we would like you to make your own Victorian toy. A thaumatrope is an optical toy that was popular in the 19th century. There is a picture on each side that is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one. See our video clip below. A copy of the thaumatrope is included in your pack.

Remote Learning – PSHE

27th January 2021S Robson

We have seen lots of fabulous examples of Health, Wellbeing and Relationships work across school, from our pupils engaged in remote learning and those pupils in school.

Some pupils in KS1 have been practising mindfulness by joining in with online story yoga, and also learning about what makes them special. Others have been learning about money, and having an awareness of saving money for something they need or would like.

In KS2, some classes have been thinking about what makes them happy, and their thoughts on this are all very unique. Researching issues facing cocoa farmers in Ghana and how organisations like Fairtrade are trying to improve working conditions and environment, has produced some interesting debate from some classes. Other pupils have created very informative posters based upon their awareness of basic first aid to do with nose bleeds.

Our Year 6 pupils have been looking at careers and potential jobs for the future, discussing  things that might lead them to choose a certain job or career.

Fantastic!

Science

This week we are thinking about the properties of materials. We would like you to test some objects and decide whether they are waterproof (does not allow water to go through it) or absorbent (a material that soaks up water easily).

We would love to see pictures of the children’s work.  Don’t forget to send work to [email protected] and feel free to email if you need anything! Thank you, Year 1 Staff.
