Musician of the month – The Beatles

7th January 2022ajennings

We are starting musician of the month at Harton where we will focus on a musician each term. The children will find out all about the artist or band, listen to their songs and talk about whether they enjoy their music. The first band we are looking at is…

Who were they?

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. They began by playing in bars and clubs in Liverpool but found international fame with their modern musical style. They mixed skiffle, beat and rock and roll and even included elements of classical music in some of their songs. The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 800 million records worldwide. They changed pop music forever and had a huge influence on culture in the UK and America.

There were 4 members:

John Lennon – lead singer, guitarist, songwriter.
Paul McCartney – bass guitarist and singer, songwriter.
George Harrison – lead guitarist and singer
Ringo Starr – drummer

Fascinating facts

  • They were originally called Beatals then they changed their name to Silver Beetles and then finally to The Beatles.
  • The Beatles were also known by their nickname, ‘The Fab four’.
  • Their first hit was ‘Love me do’ in 1962
  • After their first hit there followed an intense fan frenzy which was called Beatlemania.
  • The Beatles have had more number-one albums on the British charts, and have sold more singles in the UK, than any other act.
  • In April 1964, the Beatles had songs at numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the charts.
  • There were several other members of the band over the years but these four are considered the real Beatles.
  • The Beatles played mostly in The Cavern Club in Liverpool until they reach international fame.
  • The Beatles recorded over 200 songs – these include:

Love me do
Help                                                  Yesterday
Twist and Shout                                Hey Jude
I wanna hold your hand                     Yellow Submarine
Octopus Garden                               Here comes the sun
Eleanor Rigby

  • The band split up in 1970 due to musical differences.
  • Only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still alive.

Listen to one of the Beatles’ hits below, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (iTunes).

You can listen more of their music on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Youtube.

A Christmas Carol

30th November 2021A Dawson

As part of our literacy topic, Year-6 have been studying Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol. Last Wednesday, we took a trip to Middlesbrough Theatre to see it performed live. We had a really enjoyable day and the children’s exemplary behaviour was commented upon by several of the staff at the theatre. They were a credit to their families and their school and we’re very proud of them. Here are a couple of pictures below.

Amazing home learning in year 2!

26th January 2021ajennings

Year 2 have been working so hard at home and we have been amazed with the fantastic work they have been sending in.

English

In English, children started off the term learning about China. They have been writing and performing poems about Chinese dragon’s dancing in the New Year parade. They practised reading their poems aloud, speaking clearly and using sound effects and actions.

Here are a few of the brilliant performances:

The children used the facts they learned about China to write some wonderful information texts.

Maths

Look at all of the marvellous multiplication that the children have been doing, investigating how many equal groups there are and how many objects are in each group:

Here is even more fantastic work that year 2 have been doing, we are so proud of them!

School Awarded Artsmark Silver Award!

29th June 2020Ms A Emmerson

We are delighted to announce that Harton Primary School has been awarded an Artsmark Silver Award by the Art Council of England! We have only worked towards this award for 4 terms so this is an incredible achievement.

We are very proud this award and look forward developing our creative arts curriculum even further in the future!

The assessor made the following comment about the fantastic opportunities we provide at Harton:

‘It is good to see the progress your school has made in developing the Arts in just 4 terms. A new music scheme has been adopted and some valuable CPD has been given to staff in this and other arts. There have been several successful events and initiatives, including your Arts week, your Year 2 Heritage Learning Project and your Pen Pal Portrait Project, making some good links with other settings and establishing partnerships with arts providers and organisations.’

Five Minute Mindfulness

21st April 2020S Robson

Joe Wicks PE lessons have been so popular with our pupils, and with pupils all over the world. We know that keeping active is especially important at the moment, and maintaining physical health keeps our body healthy, as well as giving the ‘feel good factor’.

Mental wellbeing is as important to us as our physical health, particularly in recent times. So try taking 5 minutes out of a busy, or tiring day to practise 5 minutes of mindfulness – focusing on the present moment. Mindfulness can relax your body and mind, creating a feeling of calm.

Have a go with Tai chi – you can practise outdoors or indoors.

You’ll soon pick it up, and it could become as much a part of your daily routine as… brushing your teeth! Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed it when Ilona, a local Tai chi instructor, gave us lessons during Health and Wellbeing Week.

Follow the NHS Mindfulness link for further advice.

Year 5 Trip to OpenZone@the Word

2nd March 2020L Forster

On 2nd March, 5F spent the day with OpenZone at The Word.

They prepared for their trip by rehearsing scripts that they delivered in the TV studio in front of a green screen. The topic of their video was ‘Amazing Space’ – with each group covering a different aspect of space, from planets to early rockets to the future of space travel.

Here is the final product:

When not recording in front of the green screen, the children made animations using coding on Scratch3.

To end the afternoon, they worked in pairs to solve a digital escape room – solving lots of puzzles, many of which involved maths and reasoning.
