We visited St. Mary’s lighthouse in North Tyneside to explore a range of coastal habitats. We identified different living things that live in a coastal habitat and discussed why they are suited to their habitat. We investigated rock pool habitats, which are a unique habitat, and identified how it provides the basic needs for the different kinds of animals and plants that live there.
We also identified lots of physical and human features of coastal areas, such as cliffs, lighthouse and ocean.
Y2L had a fantastic day at The Oriental Museum to learn more about China as part of our English and Geography topic this half term.
We loved using our drama skills to find out about the story of the Chinese Zodiac, taking a quiz to learn animal representations, investigating artefacts to answer questions and creating our own shadow puppets. We then had lots of fun exploring more artefacts, taking part in the story of Nian and even having our own dragon dance.
We have been learning lots about the Romans so we were very excited to visit our local Roman Fort in South Shields. We took a tour around the fort, we learned that it was key military supply base to other forts along the wall. We visited the soldier’s barrack block, it was dark and cold inside their rooms! After that we went into the very impressive commanding officer’s house and spent some time in the Summer dining room. We really got a feel to what life would have been like for a soldier in Roman Britain!
In Geography, we have been learning lots about the rivers and seas around the UK! On our trip to the Watch House, we were able to view where the River Tyne meets The North Sea! We all enjoyed having a go in Mr. Ratcliffe’s jeep, he even let us play the siren before going inside to see how much the lifeboat brigade has changed how they respond to emergencies. We went to the very top of the Watch House and could spot lots of local landmarks- we could even see Tynemouth!
This half term Year 2 are learning all about the continents and oceans. We have used maps, atlases and globes to identify them and to find features, including the Equator and the North and South Poles. The children enjoyed singing songs to help remember both the names and the order of them in size.
Our topic in Geography this half term is ‘Our School and Locality’. We were visited by Alice who helped us explore our school grounds.
First we learned all about how to use a compass including how to find North, East, South and West. Then we used these directions to give our partners instructions to find treasure hidden in the yard.
Our next challenge was to use maps to navigate around a maze, following instructions given by our partners. We used directions including ‘left’ and ‘right’.
Finally Alice challenged us to use maps of our school to find objects hidden in the grounds. We had a great time exploring and made some super observations.
In our geography topic, Comparing Whitby and South Shields, we’ve been thinking about features found at the coast. We’ve also been discussing if they are physical or human features. We visited Marsden Beach and had a great time with Sandra and Laura from Tides of Change, who told us all about the features found there. We also discussed the impact of littering on coastal habitats. We’ve been learning a lot about the human impact on habitats in our science lessons.
This week in Geography we have been exploring maps. Today we used ‘Google Earth’ to look at various locations. We also looked at our school and classroom. We were set a challenge to find the treasure located somewhere outdoors. We worked in groups and used our navigation, spatial awareness and orientation skills to read a map. We also had excellent teamwork skills whilst searching for the treasure.
Last week, Year-5 had a visit from Elizabeth the RE Storyteller to tell us all about our current topic, ‘The Northern Saints’. The children had a lot of fun learning about Aidan, Bede, Cuthbert, Hild and Oswald. It was interesting to learn how the Northern Saints helped shape our local region despite dating all the way back to Anglo-Saxon times.
Year 6 have been learning about rivers in geography. They have learned all about the positive and negative impacts a river can have to the environment, for industry and for wildlife and we have now applied this learning to look specifically at one of our local rivers: the River Tyne.
We conducted some research in pairs and then we have used this to help us start to create some informative posters.
Did you know that the River Tyne is the best river for salmon in England!
Also it is home to some of the most impressive bridges in the UK including the Tyne Bridge, the Swing Bridge and the Gateshead Millenium Bridge.
This week Y3 looked at what causes a tsunami, the damage caused by tsunamis’ and how we can keep safe during a tsunami. We worked in small groups to create our own tsunami to see just how powerful they would be. We discussed the after effects of a tsunami by looking at lots of different images of the damage they have caused. We then thought about the safety precautions we could take in the event of a tsunami.
