Using their knowledge from the research they did before the half term, the children have crearted their own podcast.
They wrote their own scripts, took roles of experts (or Maya priests and villagers from ancient times) and recorded their podcasts in the last lesson.
Now their task is to edit out any mistakes they have made and add music to make their show sound more professional – using Garageband.
Year 3 enjoyed decorating their t-shirts with their adults to celebrate the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We had so much fun creating our own designs- our t-shirts included lots of crowns, jewels, Union Jack flags, stamps and even the Queen’s Corgi! We gave our adults a special treat by singing a song we have been learning in school called ‘Here’s to the Queen’- it sounded fantastic! Take a look at our creative jubilee designs…
When arriving in Scotswood Gardens, we gathered in a circle in the woods. Then we discussed and created actions to the life cycle of a flowering plant.
We then created a giant model of a plant and found pieces to represent the different parts of the flowering plant. After that, we looked around the gardens and found flowering plants to find the different parts on an actual plant.
We then explored the entire gardens to collect pollen – using sticky bees on our fingers. We even found the bee hives that the gardens looks after. There was 50,000 bees in each hive, with one queen that lays 2,000 eggs a day!
After dinner the children were allowed to explore the woods through a variety of activities, such as: den building; clay model making; potion making from the herb garden; mini-beast collecting; and making plant pots to take home a plant.
To end our day, we lay on the ground and listened to the sounds of the forest. The children said they felt ‘calm’ and ‘free’ when working in or listening to the forest.
Reception have been thoroughly enjoying their new topic of ‘How living things grow’. After planting their own sunflower seeds, they decided to create their own sunflower paintings. The children began exploring the work of Vincent Van Gogh and focused on one of his most famous pieces of artwork known as ‘Sunflowers’. They then create their own sunflower painting inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. Reception used a range of colours and shapes within their paintings to create their beautiful masterpieces. Year 3 had so much fun at Beamish! We enjoyed visiting the new 1950’s Front Street where we explored Norman Cornish’s house. Inside of Norman Cornish’s house, we did some observational sketching of what we could see. We also explored the history of the 1900’s village and pit village- some of us even got the chance to go down the coalmine and experience how it would have been for children to work in the cold, dark and damp conditions. To finish the day, we visited the Victorian school and discussed the differences in school life compared to ours today. We even had a try at using the metal hoops and sticks in the school playground- it was super tricky!
Nursery have been working so hard on their artwork! Their topic for this half term is Minibeasts and they been learning about which animals are classified as Minibeasts. The children have then created their own Minibeast artwork including ladybirds, tadpoles, caterpillars, spiders and butterflies! The children have enjoyed exploring with a range of colours and using different shapes to create these fantastic Minibeasts masterpieces. Take a look at Nursery’s beautiful artwork!
This terms Musician of the Term is Ethel Smyth (born in 1858 and died in 1944).
Who was she?
Ethel Smyth’s music consisted of masterpieces for the violin, horn and orchestra and her opera ‘The Wreckers’ was considered the most important English opera of the time. However, it was not until her 75th birthday in 1934, that her work was celebrated at the Royal Albert Hall in front of the Queen. Heartbreakingly, at this moment of long-overdue recognition, Smyth was completely deaf could hear neither her own music, nor the cheering of the crowds.

It was fantastic to finally be able to welcome our Harton families back into school again.
Thank you to all of our parents and carers for attending the Easter Stay and Play event. The children sang their Easter songs beautifully and the competition entries were EGGCELLENT!
This week we have been exploring colour mixing. We picked two primary colours and used our hands to mix them together. We enjoyed seeing how the colours changed and talking about the new colours we had made.
Today we have had a visit from the Tiny Tweeties. We enjoyed singing, dancing and playing some instruments.
