Reception have been super busy making amazing dreamcatchers! The children have been discussing what their dreams for Year 1 are. They have thought of some amazing things they would like to achieve when they come back to school in September.
Our wonderful Year 5 mini-police were nominated for The Shining Stars Award at the Citizens in Policing Awards 2022 which were held at The Sage. Joseph and Maxwell attended the awards to represent all of our mini-police. It was a great night and the boys were presented with a goody bag each and met lots of important people, including the High Sheriffs of Tyne and Wear. They were temporarily knighted by one of them and held the title ‘Sir’ for 24 hours. The boys brought back certificates to present to the other mini-police. All of the mini-police have done a great job this year and we are very proud of them.
When arriving in Scotswood Gardens, we gathered in a circle in the woods. Then we discussed and created actions to the life cycle of a flowering plant.
We then created a giant model of a plant and found pieces to represent the different parts of the flowering plant. After that, we looked around the gardens and found flowering plants to find the different parts on an actual plant.
We then explored the entire gardens to collect pollen – using sticky bees on our fingers. We even found the bee hives that the gardens looks after. There was 50,000 bees in each hive, with one queen that lays 2,000 eggs a day!
After dinner the children were allowed to explore the woods through a variety of activities, such as: den building; clay model making; potion making from the herb garden; mini-beast collecting; and making plant pots to take home a plant.
To end our day, we lay on the ground and listened to the sounds of the forest. The children said they felt ‘calm’ and ‘free’ when working in or listening to the forest.
The School Council were excited to begin their paper recycling project today.
The children began by collecting unwanted paper waste from the across the school. They even took this out to our school’s recycling bin!
Keen to help our environment, School Council members have been spreading the word and encouraging their friends to recycle any waste paper.
Keep an eye out for one of their posters and remember to put any clean paper waste into your class recycling bag.
The children enjoyed learning about recycling at Harton. They learned that our school has a special (blue) bin for this purpose and were excited to find out which waste could be placed into it. Only clean cardboard, paper, plastics and glass please!
The School Council have been busy exploring our rubbish and they noticed that we have a lot of it! The children suggested that, as a school, we make more of an effort to reuse and recycle where we can
.
The children from reception to year 6 love lunchtime club. Have a look at our photos and see what we have been up to this half term.
Y5L were excited to receive letters from their pen-pals in France today. They sent us letters and Happy New Year cards (Bonne Année 2022!).
In France, they have a big feast on Epiphany, around 6th January, and a figurine is hidden in the cake (galette de rois). The youngest child decides who gets each slice of cake and the person who receives the figurine in their slice gets to be king/queen for the day! The children in France sent us our very own crowns (couronnes).
We have written our letters back and look forward to the replies!
A few weeks ago, Ms Brennan and Ms Parkin from Harton Academy’s year-7 transition team paid us a visit to introduce themselves and also put us through our paces with some team-based, problem solving activities. Firstly, the children considered and discussed what qualities are required for effective teamwork. Then they had to put these skills to the test and work together to complete tasks as a team. It was a very interesting session and the children learned a lot.
