Pyjamarama!

4th May 2020P Mullea

A HUGE thank you for taking part in our own Pyjamarama events/ challenges on Friday 1st May.

Reading is such an important part of learning but more importantly it is just great fun for the whole family! It is a chance to relax and escape to new worlds, go on an adventure and meet exciting characters. We know that these are difficult times for everyone and it is so lovely to see so many of our wonderful families get involved. We love seeing your photos and hearing about how you spent the day celebrating reading… whilst being snuggly in PJs all day!

Enjoy the photos, look out for our lovely staff who loved having the chance to stay in PJs for longer!

28th April 2020P Mullea

Look at our Library collection now! The 300 new books given to us by Puffin World of Stories have now been added to our shelves and are ready for the children when we return to school.

I Wonder which ones you will read first?

Will it be Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy kid or maybe you want to find out about Little Women who changed the world?

How will You choose? Maybe Author Tom Fletcher can help you decide which book you may like to read first.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6CEpBXwRAo

Puffin Story time

23rd April 2020P Mullea

Puffin World of Stories have shared another wonderful resource with us to help support  families with reading during their home learning.

The handbook includes some brilliant tips for helping children develop their reading skills, as well as suggested activities you can do at home and links to online resources. You will find this document in our reading news section as pdf.

They also have a fantastic youtube channel where you can find a range of resources. Puffin publishers have created a new ‘storytime’ series in which children can settle down for 20 minutes of magic everyday with some of Puffin’s fantastic authors or follow a draw along from amazing illustrators.

Accelerated Reader at home

15th April 2020D Fawkes

We have been exploring options for the best way for children to access Accelerated Reader at home during school closures. Accelerated Reader is a hugely successful reading program in school, which the children are very enthusiastic about and it has really nurtured a love of reading for our children.

We are currently working to ensure that all of Y4, Y5 and Y6 can access Accelerated Reader at home. Please contact your child’s year group email address to request the school’s unique website link. Our website posts from 6th April gives lots of information about different websites and apps where children can access a wealth of ebooks and audiobooks to support their reading.

Please check the ZPD of each book before reading to ensure success on quizzes. You can do this by searching for the text on www.arbookfind.co.uk

Happy reading!

Word Millionaire

15th April 2020D Fawkes

Well done to Daniel Allen (Y6D) who has become a Word Millionaire on Accelerated Reader during school closures.

When asked about his success, Daniel said “Accelerated Reader, I think is one of the greatest reading apps as it not only allows you to read new books you may never have chosen before, but it rewards you – like giving you points and unlocking achievements. I am really proud of becoming a Word Millionaire. I’m sure everyone can achieve that milestone“.

Congratulations Daniel. This is a fantastic achievement and shows a huge commitment to his progress as well as a love for reading.

School Library

6th April 2020P Mullea

Over the past year we have been trying hard to improve the School Library which was in need of a little TLC. In September we were lucky enough to be selected to take part in Puffin World of Stories to help us improve our school Library space.

What is Puffin World of Stories?

Puffin World of Stories is jointly delivered by the National Literacy Trust, an independent literacy charity, and Puffin, the UK’s leading children’s publisher. Puffin World of Stories has provided us with training for staff and resources to help us champion reading for pleasure and creativity in our school.

As well as giving us lots of tips and advice, Puffin World of Stories has sent us a whopping 300 Free books for our school library!

The delivery arrived in school and I cant wait to see these wonderful books added to our shelves soon for the children to enjoy. If you look carefully below you might spot a sneaky peak at some of our new books…

3rd April 2020ajennings

Year 1 loved reading the Storm Whale as part of English. They used role play to explore how the main character, Noi, might be feeling in the story, we have fantastic actors in Year 1!

The children also wrote instructions on how to play snakes and ladders, then had a go at playing the game.

3rd April 2020P Mullea

On Monday 16th March, Y1M visited The Word. The children were very excited to explore the library because they just LOVE reading!

When we arrived, we got to go into the story room. Jolene our Librarian read us a brilliant story called “Silly Billy” by Anthony Browne.

This story is about a little boy has so many worries he can’t sleep at night. At first he feels really silly for being worried but when he talks to his Grandmother she makes him feel better. She tells Billy that everyone has worries and gives him some worry dolls to share his worries with. Telling the worry dolls his worries helps Billy to sleep at night.

After reading the story the class designed and named their own worry dolls and thought about any worries they might have.

Before leaving the library we also had a chance to explore the shelves… we loved looking at all the new books and some of the children became members, borrowing books to take home.
