This week in Geography we have been exploring maps.  Today we used ‘Google Earth’ to look at various locations.  We also looked at our school and classroom.  We were set a challenge to find the treasure located somewhere outdoors.  We worked in groups and used our navigation, spatial awareness and orientation skills to read a map.  We also had excellent teamwork skills whilst searching for the treasure.

STEM WEEK RECEPTION DAY 5

Today we were ‘Lego Engineers’.  We designed and created our own Lego models.  Our teachers have been really impressed with our teamwork skills such as sharing, discussing and compromising,   We have had so much fun during our school  STEM week!!!!

Well done done to all year 1 who took part in the KidSafe programme. We are all very proud of how sensible the children have been and they have all really enjoyed the sessions.

KidSafe session 5 in year 1

During today’s session KS had Yukky feelings due to his parents/carers arguing, KS had overheard the arguing many times and has become increasingly upset and he even thought it was his fault.

Children gave KS strategies to help him get rid of his Yukky feelings i.e., talking to another trusted adult about the Yukky feelings he was experiencing.

Today has been the last Kidsafe session in school.  We have re-capped on the previous four sessions with the children and evaluated with the them about what they had learnt and what they had enjoyed about the Kidsafe programme.  The children will al receive a certificate for their fantastic effort and completing the programme.

KidSafe session 4 in Year 1

In today’s session we talked about “Our Bodies”.

We talked about the importance of the private places we all have on our bodies.  We introduced two sets of rules, (the second set being specifically for children) to help keep our bodies safe for e.g., ‘Your private places are special, look after them and keep them safe and you are the boss of your body and your private places’.

We also discussed good and bad/yukky secrets.  We used our puppet KS to role-play a good secret and a Yukky secret.

We again talked about the trusted adults the children could tell if they ever had Yukky feelings.

KidSafe session 3 in year 1.

During today’s session we talked about keeping safe whilst using computers etc., the session aims to provide children with simple and  effective skills to keep themselves safe whilst accessing computers or viewing films and computer games etc.,

Topics covered :

KS scenarios around computer safety, dealing with inappropriate images/material on the Internet, where else children may see/read unsuitable material i.e., mobile phones, D.V.D’s, games, television etc., film classifications U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18 and why they are there, computer game classifications 3+, 7+ etc., and why they are there and how peer pressure can impact on what children watch and play.

The children were fantastic and gave KS the monkey some really sensible ways to deal with his problems. We are really impressed with the children in year 1 and how mature they are when it comes to dealing with these sensitive situations.

The Tranquil Treehouse in Year 2

Our friend Nadia from The Tranquil Treehouse came to visit us today and she taught us about self-regulation to help us to calm down if we get angry feelings. We thought about a time we felt angry, how that made us feel and what we did. We talked about fizzy feelings and how to release them without us hurting ourselves, others or things around us with actions or words. Nadia showed us how to perform lion breath to help us if we have angry feelings.
