RAP Visit – South Shields Fire Station

Y6 recently took part in the RAP workshop (Reducing Accidents at Play) at South Shields Fire Station.

The children met with firefighters who told them what to do in the case of a fire: who to telephone and how to keep yourself and everyone in your home as safe as possible.

We met with someone from Nexus who discussed how to safely get the Metro and access public transport.

We met with someone from Northern Power Grid who told us all about the dangers of electricity in our homes and outside in substations and how to keep ourselves safe around them.

We met with volunteers from RNLI who told us how to keep safe around water, including rivers and the sea.

We had a brilliant morning and learned lots to help keep us safe.

Among Us: fairly safe, or pretty sus? This scenario of spaceship crew members cooperating to complete tasks and uncover murderous alien imposters has garnered a sizeable and committed following with younger gamers

Though Among Us is presented in a (mainly) sanitised visual style, any children’s game which essentially foregrounds the concepts of deceit, betrayal and killing is always likely to cause some concerns. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide gets among it with Among Us.

Created in 2018 by a small indie studio that (at the time) had only four employees, Among Us has become one of the gaming world’s biggest breakout hits of recent years. In 2020, for example, it was the world’s most-downloaded mobile game. Its simplicity helped Among Us to resonate with younger players in particular: the game’s second largest audience slice is the 13–18 age bracket.

While the 7+ age rating, emphasis on teamwork and cartoonish, colourful graphics all suit a young fan-base, however, the game does carry more serious risks than betrayal by a team-mate or an untimely on-screen demise – with in-game purchases and possible contact from strangers on our #WakeUpWednesday guide’s list of hazards that trusted adults should bear in mind.

A Special Visit from the School Nurses

In Year 2, as part of our work in Health, Wellbeing and Relationships, we’ve been learning about ways to be healthy. Last week, we were learning about the benefits of exercise so we decided to create our own Joe Wicks inspired fitness video. We hope you enjoy it!

Y2L – From Cow To Carton at Embleton Hall Dairies.

Y2L were one of the lucky winners of a competition to design a milkshake. As our prize, we go to visit Embleton Hall Dairy Farm to find out how milk gets from the cow to the cartons we drink every day in school. We had a session with Animal Encounters, a tour of the farm’s fields and cow sheds to complete an activity trail, saw the milking robots milking cows, visited the nursery to see the calves and visited the dairy’s production plant to see the milk getting put into cartons! We had such an amazing day and learnt so much.

Bolognese sauce

In Design and Technology this half term, the children have been looking at, comparing and designing their own bolognese sauce.

They searched for different recipes on the internet, and worked in a group to devise their own with ingredients they would like and how to make a healthy.

In preparation for cooking, the children were tasked with practicing at home chopping food, so they had some experience of what was to come.

On Monday they were tasked with making their sauce using slow cookers in the classroom. A range of ingredients they used included: onions, celery, sweetcorn, potatoes, garlic and a wide range of herbs.

Some ingredients were not chopped prior to putting in the pots, so the children adapted to use (cleaned) tools from around the classroom to solve the problem.

Lego League Nationals 2022-23

The Harton Primary Puzzlers visited Harrogate Convention Centre on 22nd April for the 2022-23 First Lego League UK and Ireland national tournament. The theme this year was Superpowered and was centered around finding efficient ways to generate, store and transport energy. The Puzzlers took their Skipatron 5000 working prototype along, and had queues of children and adults waiting to have a turn! They were interviewed by TV presenter, Maddie Moate, who even had a turn and came second on the leaderboard after Mrs Ratcliffe!

During the robot game, the team scored their highest score of 245! Commentators noted how efficient the team were throughout the game. Maizie was even invited to join the commentators to discuss the team’s strategy for completing the missions.

Out of the 69 teams from across the UK and Ireland, The Puzzlers emerged as the top ranked team from the North East of England, securing an overall position of 15^th place, based on: their innovation idea and presentation; display of core values throughout the day; and their score in the robot competition. They were also in second place for a special judge’s award as well as being in the top 20 for their innovation project and core values.

We are all so proud of Jacob, Ella, Seamus, Mia, Darcie, Maizie, Max and Ellis for being absolute superstars throughout the day. They were a true testament to Harton Primary School.
