Last week Year 1 had a fabulous visit from author and illustrator Liz Million. She taught us lots about how she draws illustations for stories and showed us how to create characters with simple shapes like a taco, a chicken nugget and even a potato!
The children followed along as Liz taught us how to draw characters from the traditional tale Hansel and Gretel.
We had so much fun and created amazing illustrations!
Congratulations to our Reader’s of the Month in January. As always, Reading is a top priority for us at Harton Primary and the children continue to make us proud with their achievements in this area.

Saifan in Year 1 who has moved up 2 book levels in just a few weeks!
Rory in Year 2 who has shown huge improvements with his reading. He has gained great fluency and is trying to hard with reading.
Our Year 3 pupils have impressed their teachers with 100% in their AR quizzes – Well done Louie, Aurora- Rose and Gracie!
In Year 4, Congratulations to George for amazing effort in reading. He has the reading age of 15 years and 2 months!
Jacob in Year 5 who has made progress of 1 year and 11 months in his STAR reading assessment.
And finally Amelia, Savannah and Charlie in Year 6 who have all made excellent progress in their STAR reading assessments.

Due to Mrs Davis leaving at half term for maternity leave, parents evening for Y4D will be on Monday 2nd February and Monday 9th February from 1PM. Booking for other classes will be available at a later date.

Last week Year 1 had a visit from Stef (and her many animal friends) as part of our Science topic ‘Animals including Humans’.
Last half term we learned all about animal classification, including characteristics of the following: Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles and Fish.
The children have become experts at grouping animals by their class and spotting characteristics. They got to put their knowledge to the test when Stef visited.
Did you know a Hedgehog is a mammal like us? Their spikes are actually hair!

The Foundation of Light are offering a free 12-week course for families of children in years 5 and 6 in South Tyneside. There will be one 90-minute session per week, which include family fitness sessions, healthy eating advice, fun giveaways and incentives. The course begins on Monday 12th January, but parents/carers can sign up for later sessions if they can’t make the first ones.
Today we had a special visit from ‘The Akademiks’.
We all sang and danced to Christmas music.

We had a fantastic Christmas party. We played various party games, sang songs and danced. We also had some lovely food and a delicious cupcake!!!
This term children in Years 2 and 4 have worked with Elliott from Durham County Cricket club. The children have learnt batting, bowling and fielding skills and on Friday they got a chance to play Glow in the Dark Cricket.
On Friday 30 children from Year 4 attended a skipping festival at Temple Park. The children learnt individual, paired and group skipping skills and we hope to see them being performed on the yard this year.
Last week the children enjoyed a visit from some ex- coal miners and experts from South Shields Museum, who helped us to understand more about the types of jobs people would have done in our local area in the past.
The children enjoyed exploring historical artefacts and finding out what they would have been used for. We also got the chance to try on some traditional clothes and ask lots of questions.
