The children in Y1M were surprised with a special visitor on Monday, John from West Boldon Lodge. He joined us at school for a day of activities as part of our Science topics including Green plants and Living things and the environment.
We had a fantastic day, it was so much fun. Here are some of the things we got up to.
- We learned about different kinds of plants and impressed John by naming different parts of plants and trees. At the beginning of the day we thought plants were a bit boring but John taught us that actually plants are AMAZING! Did you know plants make their own food?
- We played seed tag, thinking about all the things plants need to grow. We had to collect air, water, sunlight and soil to make sure our seeds grew.
- We planted our own lettuce seeds to take home.
- We learned about life cycles of different animals including Butterflies, Hens and Frogs. We worked in teams to find clues and put the lifecycle back together.
- We used Butterfly nets to search for insects in the plants and long grass. We found lots of flies, snails and other minibeasts.
- Finally as a special treat, John let us cut wood and we have a campfire. We talked about fire safety and knew it was important to stay away from the fire. We roasted marshmallows too- they were delicious!
Thank you to John for coming and making it “the best day ever”.
