Year 5

Definitely a Canny Friday!

By eclark20th March 2017

The Year 6 School Council members had a busy Friday afternoon as they collected and counted all of the cans and dried foods brought in for Canny Friday. They were amazed to find that we had received 56 more donations for the South Tyneside Food Bank than the week previous. Jake was particularly pleased as he discovered that we had even managed to collect tea, coffee, UHT milk and several pasta sauces. These were all items that Maureen told us were in short supply at the food bank.

Our current total for Canny Friday stands at 554 cans, jars and packets. We’re looking forward to the next one (on Friday 24th March) already.

Troop 5F at Beamish

By L Forster14th March 2017

At the end of last week, 5F and 5W spent the day at Beamish, to link with our War Horse topic for literacy.

Before our World War One workshop, 5F went into the 1900’s town by tram. Everybody was able to fit on the top level of the double decker tram, much to everyone’s excitement.

Waiting for the tram

After disembarking (and a quick toilet break), we were able to catch a sweet making session. We watched as the working pulled the custard part of the the sweet so it would not mix with the rhubarb, before cutting.

After cutting sections off the mixture he ran it through a press, that made bumps in the long thin mixture.

He let it cool on the table before smashing it into the sweets we all got to try. It was really nice trying ‘still-warm’ rhubarb and custards.

Walking to the sweet shop

Stretching the mixture…

…joining the mixtures…

…pressing the mixture…

….making the sweets

Next, we looked in the garage (to look at cars that had to be wound up), the bakers and the dentist. Ask the children what was used to wash out your mouth in the 19th century…you’ll be disgusted, trust us!

We enjoyed another tram ride to the pit village, and after a walk through the woods, we met our Army officer.

We completed drills in the street, learning ‘about turns’ and ‘at ease stances’, before being asked to conduct an investigation. A 15 year old boy sneaked off to join the army, and we interviewed different people to find out why.

Walking in the woods

Meeting our Commanding Officer…

About turns

Boys receiving feathers

Being given our task

Interviewing villagers

and the school teacher.

Reporting back.

After our lunch, we went down the mine. We learned about the life of miners and their working conditions. We even experienced what it would be like if the candled went out in our lamp.

Getting kitted up

Going underground

The only light in the mine

We ended our day in the school, looking at the classrooms and comparing them to our own classroom.

Luckily, Mr Forster does not have a cane or leather strap for misbehaviour.

Our last activity was playing on the yard, using hop scotch and the metal hoops. Not everybody was able to make the wheel spin.

Wow! 249 cans so far!

By eclark13th March 2017

Our School Council members have been carefully counting your cans of food. They were thrilled to find that our first ‘Canny Friday’ resulted in 249 cans being collected for the South Tyneside Food Bank.

We’re looking forward to our next Canny Friday (17th March) already!

Hospitality and Hope visit the School Council

By eclark12th March 2017

School Council members were thrilled to receive a visit from Maureen, a volunteer at Hospitality and Hope. Maureen brought many boxes with her so that all of your cans and dried foods, received as part of our ‘Canny Friday’ initiative, can be stored safely.

The School Council cannot wait to count all of the donations received so far.

Canny Friday!

By eclark12th March 2017

This half term, our School Council are collecting donations of canned and other dried foods to help the South Tyneside Food Bank. Providing emergency food parcels for local individuals and families in crisis, the food bank is run by ‘Hospitality and Hope’. This is a Christian faith based charity that was established in 2002 to help support vulnerable individuals from within our community.Webpost_cansoffood

Donations of canned and dried foods for the food bank can be sent into school with your child each Friday. Our School Council members will be involved in sorting these donations, prior them being collected by the charity.

The first ‘Canny Friday’ will be held on Friday 10th March. The event will continue to be held, each Friday, until the end of term.

Choir perform in ‘The Spring Sing’ at The Sage.

By C Wells3rd March 2017

Wow!! What a day! Some of Harton Primary School choir have been to the Sage today to take part in ‘The Spring Sing’. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Performing alongside nine other schools from South Tyneside and Gateshead we tackled songs like: The Banana boat song, Bare Necessities and even some current material like ‘Home’ by the Foo Fighters.  Our favourite was probably “Our House’ by Madness.

When we arrived we had a lovely carpet picnic before a rehearsal in an enormous performance space – Sage 1. Finally we performed on the Concourse in front of Mams and Dads and invited guests.

As you can see from our photographs we all made Easter bonnets for the occasion. Thankyou to Rachel, Evie and Alycia’s mam for coming with us. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

School Council visit to Jarrow Town Hall

By eclark24th January 2017

On Tuesday 17th January, our School Council were invited to Jarrow Town Hall to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside.

After viewing the outside of the building and looking for clues regarding its age, the children enjoyed moving inside to visit the Jarrow Crusade exhibition. They learnt that the (council organised) 300 mile trek to London occurred 80 years previous.

Next, our School Council moved into the Parlour where they were able to handle the Mayor’s mace and ceremonial chains. They were amazed at the weight of these, not to mention their value.

Finally, the children explored the Council Chamber. They learnt about local democracy and were granted special permission to sit in the Mayor’s chair, before signing a special book to show that they had been.

Many thanks to our parent helpers for accompanying us on this visit.

Year 5 had a visit from staff from Robertson, who helped build and extend our school.

We were given the challenge of building a 4 metre tall tetrahedron, using sticks and elastic bands. We had to build small tetradhedrons first, consisting of 6 sticks and elastic bands to hold the ends together.

Once the ‘mini-tetrahedron’ was complete, we worked as a team to join them together to make the ‘medium-tetrahedron’.

The final stage required the adults. After we joined the 3 bottom levels together, the adults lifted the final one on to the top, completing our 4m tall tetrahedron.

After our afternoon of working together, and a discussion about the interesting jobs the people from Robertson have done, almost half the class were interesting in a job in constructions.

Maths in Motion

For the past 6 weeks, 15 children in year 5 have been working hard every Tuesday after-school to use maths to compete in a Grand Prix race against each other using the program ‘Maths In Motion’ from Jaguar cars, showing how maths in used to prepare and race Grand Prix cars.

Many areas of the curriculum are addressed by taking part in ‘Maths in Motion’ have included:

  • Measuring angles of corners
  • Measure & scale of straights
  • Multiplication and division for speeds
  • Percentages of performance
  • Decimals
  • Rounding
  • Ratios
  • Mean
  • Interpreting graphs
  • Speed
  • Distance and time for practise laps

After hours of measuring and multiplying corners and speeds, completing copious amounts of practise laps, on Thursday lunchtime we were ready to race our 50 lap Monaco Grand Prix!

During those 50 laps, we had:

  • 5 crashes in the first lap
  • 2 running out of fuel in 21st lap, along with Mr Forster’s engine exploding.
  • 4 cars running out of fuel from the 23rd to the 25th lap (one ran out just before pit stop).
  • Leaving only 2 cars to race the final 25 laps, which resulted in one running out of fuel on the 50th (and final lap) and the winner completing all 50, albeit with smoking tyres since her 48th lap.

Bronze medal, for running out of fuel on lap 25: Katie

Silver medal, running out of fuel on the last lap: Kira

Gold medal, only car to complete all laps: Libby

Despite not winning, all the children enjoyed this club (especially the competition) and have used their maths in a practical way. We definitely have some budding engineers within this group!

Traditional Chinese tales

By S Robson5th July 2016

Year 5 were learning about Chinese culture in the past through listening to horoscopes, finding out about animals which are held sacred in China, and listening to traditional stories. They then SAM_3248wrote their own stories based upon Chinese culture.
