In Literacy, Year 4 read ‘Gregory Cool’, about a young boy who found it difficult at first in adjusting to a different culture when he visited his grandparents in Tobago. The children wrote similarities and differences between British culture
and Tobago. They also wrote their own stories set in another culture – a tropical island.
We’re getting ready for a summer of sport here at Harton Primary School!
Pupils from schools in Spain, Italy and Poland have sent us some cards they designed on an Olympic theme. Year 4 have also been making cards which were sent to schools in 5 European countries, promoting fair play, diversity and effort. We also researched Olympic facts on the ipads. Did you know that the mascots for the Games are called Vinicius and Tom? There will also be two other sports added to the Olympic line up – golf and rugby sevens!
There’s a lot of exciting events lined up for this half term – a whole school celebration of Euro 16, a ‘Road to Rio’ dance workshop for Year 2 and 3, and a theatre production entirely in French for Year 4 ad 5, entitled ‘ Les Olympiques’. C’est super!
Year 4 had a great time going to Marsden and Sand Haven beach for a cross-curricular trip. We were looking at human and physical features at the two beaches because we are learning about coastal features in Geography. We kept an eye out for living things as part of our Science topic and we also clocked up a lot of steps for the end of the fitness challenge. The children were even rewarded with a delicious Minchella’s ice cream and a chance to play on the beach!
Year 4 have loved learning about the Ancient Egyptians. One of the things we learnt about was the River Nile and how important it was and continues to be today.
Due to the fact that Egypt is mainly desert land, it was always very important to the farmers that the River Nile flooded. During the dry seasons, farmers had to find different ways to water their crops. They would use a machine called a shaduf to collect water from the river and then pour it over the crops.
A lot of children in Year 4 made shadufs using various materials including Lego, cardboard, wood, straws and many more! Some children carried out research about how they worked. The teachers were all extremely impressed with the hard work the children put into making them. Well done, Year 4!

The second challenge for the Fitness Challenge was to create a fitness routine that children could do on a playtime or lunchtime . The teachers have been so impressed with the children’s ideas and teamwork for making the routine as well as how well they performed it. Our drill sergeant leading the routine was an absolute star too! Well done, Joshua.

For the next 6 weeks, Year 4 will be taking part in the Fitness challenge along with several other schools in South Tyneside.
All of the children and most of the staff, have been given a pedometer to promote walking and staying super fit and healthy!
Every day the children will record their steps which will be totalled up and then the steps will be recorded online.
Every week there is also a fitness super challenge that the children take part it.
This week the classes had to come up with a name for their team and a photo to show competitiveness.

Our Year 4 children put on an incredible Easter performance for everyone at Harton Methodist Church. The concert was called ‘Easter Praise’ and it lived up to expectations! Everyone had an important role to play, and what made it so special, was that the children all had smiles on their faces and were genuinely having a great time. The staff all agreed that the singing was superb, and that some children may be destined for a career on the stage!
We were made to feel most welcome at the church, and look forward to returning again sometime.

We were treated to a brilliant performance by this fabulous theatre company! It was amazing that the children could follow the story – it was spoken entirely in French! Year 4 had been learning some French songs so they could participate in the performance, and a particular favourite was ‘Moi, j’adore les bananes’. They will be returning in the Summer term for Year 5 – I wonder what their next performance will be about?
