Year 4

Visit from Sarah – Young Enterprise.

By Ms C Smith5th July 2016

Last week and today, Year 4S have been involved in a primary program called ‘Our Nation’.

The children were visited by a very successful business woman called Sarah, who talked to us about real business and what she does for a living.

The children took on several tasks and discussed many areas of a business.

The children started off by discussing the ‘Business Pie’ thinking about : communication, location, supply chain, responsibilities and people. The children then moved on to discuss ‘Our Nation’ and the kind of area that we live in and what local business we see.

The children then looked at customers and where they can buy items and how to make a produce appeal to them.

The class then moved on to looking at the roles and responsibilities within a business and how to make one work.

The final task the children had, was to design an apple juice carton (the children will make the cartons next week, once their designs are finished).  The children had to think about some difficult business questions, such as:

  • What will make your carton successful?
  • What do you need to communicate?
  • Who is your customer?
  • What will appeal to them?

Well done to all of Y4S, you worked so well and I can see some of you becoming really successful business men and women in the future.

Technology Tom visit to Year 4.

By Ms C Smith5th July 2016

Today, Year 4 have taken part in a fantastic workshop with ‘Technology Tom’.

The children made roll tubes structures of siege towers. It was extremely fun and the children faced several exciting problem-solving challenges.

Tom asked the children several tricky questions including:

How can an invading army get into a castle with high walls and barricaded doors? If the invaders put up ladders the people in the castle will push them away!

How can we make the structure stronger?

The children worked well in a group and tackled every challenge with which they were faced. The staff were very impressed with all of the children, it shows that they must be ready for Year 5!

Le Tour de France – who will win le maillot jaune?

By S Robson5th July 2016

Our Tour de France Day across the school was a great success. Year 4 sang a song in French… ‘Je voyage partout sur mon velo, sur mes pedales je fait la danse.’ Their French unit had been to learn more about the Tour de France, which they most certainly did!

Y4R working on critical thinking skills and teamwork.

By S Robson1st July 2016

The children in Y4R have been working on two different tasks this week, which both involved working in established groups. The children took ownership of the task. First, they decided upon which type of person or learner they considered themselves to be. Then they came to a consensus about which role each member of the group should take. Some children were the facilitator’s of their group, whilst others were the product manager, time keeper, recorder or team representative.

The first task involved brainstorming as many ideas as possible, then filtering so that eventually, after much negotiation, some rules were established for critical skills group work.

The second task was to design and make a group shield which represented every member of the group. The team representative then had to feedback to other groups on how they made the shield, and explain why team colleagues chose the symbols they did. It was a great success!

Business Education in Year 4 – Our Nation.

By S Robson28th June 2016

Year 4 were learning about business through a workshop entitled ‘Our Nation’, led by Gurpreet Jagpal over the course of two afternoons. Gurpreet shared his university and business background with the children at first, then through a series of games, discussion, critical thinking, teamwork and a project, the children could understand how the geography of our nation could have an impact on business. We are grateful to Gurpreet for giving up some time from his busy schedule to share his insightful knowledge and experience.

Euro 16 / International Day – celebrating sport and culture.

By S Robson28th June 2016

Merhaba! Hello!

Merhaba! Hello! With 2016 being the year of the Rio Olympics and Euro 16 in France, it seemed like a good idea to dedicate a whole day to the sportsmen and sportswomen, and the cultures, of different nations. Each year group chose a different country to celebrate, then the children participated in sports, games, research and food tasting activities. This culminated in watching a live Euro16 football match.

Indian dance

In Year 4 and 5, we welcomed the well-established poet and scriptwriter, Anjum Malik. Anjum has worked with our school before, at Arvon’s Lumb Bank, where she inspired a group of Year 6 children into writing some amazing poetry.

She was looking forward to working with Harton Primary again, and led workshops in Creative Writing, and Writing Monologues over the course of two days.

Year 4 started with some Indian dance, then were shown how a simple scarf could be transformed into just about anything! The scarves inspired the children to role play a scenario, then write in any genre. They really had a great time.

The Year 5 children attended a ‘read through’ of Anjum’s playscript Monologue, just like real actors do. The monologue was about a Bangladeshi family’s experience of racism in a different culture, and finding a place in that society.

Year 4 and 5 came together to perform their work – there were some very well written and original pieces. Well done everyone.

Fitness Challenge Finale

By R Errington14th June 2016

Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Fitness Challenge in South Tyneside. On Friday 10th June we had the opportunity to go to Temple Park for the finale event. All of the children (and the staff) had a great time taking part in different activities such as dodgeball, tug of war, kicky rounders, quick cricket and the Olympic Obstacle course.

Miss Errington’s class (The Extraordinarily Energetic Exercisers) were surprised and delighted to find out they had won the ‘Super Hero award’ for completing all six of the challenges and the sprint finish.

All of the children came home with a well-deserved goody bag including a t-shirt, cap and frisbee!
