Today, Year 4 had a very special visitor from long long ago. Sif, the viking lady, visited year 4 to tell us all about the Vikings and how they lived. She showed us her clothing and what it all meant, showed us a range of weapons and how to make our own clothing. We all learnt a lot about the Vikings but I don’t think we would like to live in the Viking times, we are all quite happy with the time period we live in now!
Year 4 love Pudsey bear! In fact, we love him so much we had a great afternoon colouring him in and making a range of photo ‘props’ to take some fun photos.

Since the start of Year 4, the children in all of year 4 have been working super hard on their reading skills. The children have all been given their own IPADS to use in school, which they are all using to complete a reading quiz based on the book of their choice.
The children are loving this new program and the teachers are extremely impressed with the progress, interested and determination the children are showing to improve their reading skills.
They are all getting super confident to answer comprehension questions and get 100% in every single test !

Year 4 have been learning their times table this week and because they were so good, we decided to make our very own times table song to help others in the school learn their 3 times table.
Well done Year 4, you are now experts at the 3 times table!

The children have done a lot of work thinking about different animals and their habitats, as well as how the coast is used in science and geography. Some of the children participated in a debate about how the Leas should be used. They worked in groups such as: members of South Tyneside council, a local business, residents of South Shields, families coming to the coast on holiday and people who work for the National Trust.
Each group had to give their views about the idea of a shipping port being built along the coastline of South Shields. Miss Errington was extremely impressed by the great ideas that the children came up with by working as a team and how confident children were in giving their arguments and counter-arguments.
Our last topic in maths in year 4 was measuring capacity. The children had great fun and only got a little bit wet while we were measuring and estimating how much water different different containers held. The teachers were all very impressed by how accurately everyone measured and the excellent teamwork shown by the children in year 4.
The third group of children from Year 4 had a brilliant time visiting the Robertson’s site at South Tyneside General Hospital. We had a chance to see different rooms which were nearly complete and find out more about the building process.
The site is for the new Care Hub for elderly people living with dementia and is due to be complete next Friday. Andrew, the site manager, told us about small cabinets outside of the room for relatives to put pictures and messages in to make the residents happy by reminding them of nice times in their lives. He showed us around the different rooms, which were all different colours and each area had a different name- all after plants and flowers.He also told us lots of other interesting facts, including over 52,000 bricks have been used to build the building and they have used enough cable in the building to wrap all the way around the world!
The children were very lucky to see the ‘almost’ finished project. The children all thought it looked like a hotel it was that good!
La Belgique, la Suisse, et Mali! Just some of the countries represented by les animaux in our theatre workshop, run by TSF theatre group. Le lion, le lapin et la baleine were a few of the animals the Year 4 children had to perform as. They learned a lot of new language, as well as improving their ability to perform. The icing on the cake was when Year 4 got to perform alongside the actors. Year 4 and 5 were amazed at how much of the story they could follow, considering it was spoken in French!
Salvador Dali, a well-known Spanish surrealist painter, was our artist of choice on Art Day. We read about his life, looked at his most popular works of art, and tried to work out the symbolism and meaning in his paintings. One of his paintings, ‘Los Elefantes’, showed the elephants having extremely long, thin legs, attached to regular shaped bodies. Very surreal!
Our own pastel and felt tip designs had a bird theme because we had been to Washington Wetlands on a visit, and were making information booklets about birds in Literacy.
The results were impressive, and we had a lovely day.
In Y4S today, we have been celebrating Art day.
We focused on a very unusual painter called Salvador Dali and in particular we looked at one of his famous pieces of work ‘The Elephant’. As our new topic in Literacy is ‘ Endangered Birds’, we decided to take Dali’s work ‘ The Elephant’ and make it our own by making a bird version.
The children designed their drawing and then presented it on card and on a canvas. We also carried out research on Salvador Dali to find out about his other art work and his life.
