Canny Friday!

This half term, our School Council are collecting donations of canned and other dried foods to help the South Tyneside Food Bank. Providing emergency food parcels for local individuals and families in crisis, the food bank is run by ‘Hospitality and Hope’. This is a Christian faith based charity that was established in 2002 to help support vulnerable individuals from within our community.Webpost_cansoffood

Donations of canned and dried foods for the food bank can be sent into school with your child each Friday. Our School Council members will be involved in sorting these donations, prior them being collected by the charity.

The first ‘Canny Friday’ will be held on Friday 10th March. The event will continue to be held, each Friday, until the end of term.

 

Choir perform in ‘The Spring Sing’ at The Sage.

Wow!! What a day! Some of Harton Primary School choir have been to the Sage today to take part in ‘The Spring Sing’. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Performing alongside nine other schools from South Tyneside and Gateshead we tackled songs like: The Banana boat song, Bare Necessities and even some current material like ‘Home’ by the Foo Fighters.  Our favourite was probably “Our House’ by Madness.

When we arrived we had a lovely carpet picnic before a rehearsal in an enormous performance space – Sage 1. Finally we performed on the Concourse in front of Mams and Dads and invited guests.

As you can see from our photographs we all made Easter bonnets for the occasion. Thankyou to Rachel, Evie and Alycia’s mam for coming with us. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

 

 

Y4L’s Trip to OpenZone @ The Word

On Thursday 19th January, Y4L went on their visit to the Openzone @ The Word. We enjoyed taking part in lots of activities such as building Milo the Lego robot, using coding to programme Milo to move and change colour and also programming a cartoon character to avoid obstacles.

While we were there we also had a fantastic opportunity to film our own information video about Europe. It was so exciting to film with a green screen and an autocue – we felt like real TV stars!

Y4P Trip to The Open Zone

On Wednesday the 18th of January Y4P paid a visit to The Open Zone at The Word.  After a tour of The Word the children took part in coding activities and created a video explaining the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise.

Harton’s Year 4 To Star In New Musical

The Shields Gazette featured our Year 4 classes- 40 children will take part in South Tyneside’s Music Festival.

The festival takes place on Monday, 20th March 2017.

The children are performing a musical by music teacher, Andrew Richardson.

Our children are really enjoying the rehearsals and are looking forward to performing Andrew’s musical ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’.

School Council visit to Jarrow Town Hall

On Tuesday 17th January, our School Council were invited to Jarrow Town Hall to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside.

After viewing the outside of the building and looking for clues regarding its age, the children enjoyed moving inside to visit the Jarrow Crusade exhibition. They learnt that the (council organised) 300 mile trek to London occurred 80 years previous.

Next, our School Council moved into the Parlour where they were able to handle the Mayor’s mace and ceremonial chains. They were amazed at the weight of these, not to mention their value.

Finally, the children explored the Council Chamber. They learnt about local democracy and were granted special permission to sit in the Mayor’s chair, before signing a special book to show that they had been.

Many thanks to our parent helpers for accompanying us on this visit.

Hart-on-SOLE

The Harton SOLE Club is Harton’s Self Organised Learning Environment

Today the ‘Hart-on-SOLE’ club started with one big question- Why can’t penguins fly?

The children came up with their own groups, shared facts with each other and recorded their ideas in their own way.

Y4S trip @ the Word.

Year 4 had such a good time at the word taking part in a range of different activities. We loved doing the coding, playing with LEGO and programming it to make it move but our favourite activity of the day was becoming movie stars.

And we also learnt how to use ICT to create Lego robots.

 

 

This year’s skipping club

This year’s skipping club have worked extremely hard to develop various individual skills such as:

  • double bounce
  • speed bounce
  • side swing
  • cross over

They have managed to do some of these, and other skills too, forwards and backwards. They have also developed skills with a partner and in a group. Some particular favourites included butterfly, face to face, baby fox, run jump out and Texas star.

Technology Tom.

On Wednesday, Year 4 had such a special treat as Technology Tom visited us, to help us to design and make a Christmas themed circuit.

Tom discussed with the children how a circuit works ( the children knew a lot about this already as this was last half terms Science topic and the current D&T topic- Tom was really impressed with the children).

They then made their own circuit using the materials provided by Tom, they had to make sure they were using the wires correctly with the metal wires sticking out, to ensure that the electricity could be complete. The children then moved on to making a switch ( it was super tricky) but they all managed to do it.

Then they designed their Christmas idea and then made their design using a range of materials.

We thought the end product was amazing! Well done Year 4!
