Volcanoes and Earthquakes!

This week Y3 enjoyed a drama workshop with One Day Create all about Volcanoes and Earthquakes!
We explored the key aspects of the physical geography of volcanoes and earthquakes and examined current natural disasters and significant historical incidents though quizzes and being intrigued by the descriptions of different earthquakes and volcanoes around the world. We acted out and discussed what life would be like if natural disaster occurred in our area and expressed our ideas and feelings through voice, movement, role play and drama!

We used practical apparatus to work out amounts in pounds and pence. We consolidated different ways of writing down an amount in pounds and pence. Finally, we were able to compare different amounts.

Week 7- History Club

12th May 2023L Moore

This week in History club, we talked about the River Tyne and discovered why it has been significant over time. We found out about shipbuilding on Tyneside and the Jarrow Crusade. We listened to the ‘Last Ship’ by Sting and then made our ships!

The Coronation of King Charles III

Today we celebrated the coronation of King Charles. Across the school the children have been finding out about King Charles and the history of coronations. We came to school dressed in red, white and blue then had our own coronation party!

Reader of the Month- April

5th May 2023P Mullea

Congratulations to our Reader’s of the Month for April.

The theme for this month was being responsible.  The staff looked carefully at the children who take good care of our books, library spaces and return their books regularly; taking responsbility for their own progress in reading.

A special mention goes to Sapphire and Harry from Y5 for making 2 years of progress on their STAR reading assessment this month.

An extra special mention to Jude in Y5 who has made PHENOMENAL progress of 4 years in his reading age. He now has a reading age of 15 years 6 months! WOW

We hope the children enjoy their new books. Keep up the hard work.

Complimentary Colours

Today we looked at primary colours and Piet Mondrain. We looked at the shapes, patterns and colour themes he used in his artwork then created our own artwork inspired by Piet Mondrain using only primary colours.

Poetry

In English, we read through our fabulous sentences from the day before and picked our favourite sentence. We discussed why we had chosen this sentence and gave reasons to justify our choice- for example, ‘I used a good adverb/ this is a powerful adjective/ I used a preposition’.

We worked with a partner to practise reading loudly, clearly and with expression. When we felt confident, we put our sentences together to form a group poem!

Town Hall Visit

5th May 2023S Whitfield

Year Three student council members had the opportunity to visit the town hall. We learned about democracy and sat in on an election hustings where candidates tried to convince us to vote for them. We discussed the impact our votes would have on the local community- for example one candidate said they would listen to all constituents and advocate for them. One candidate wanted to build a new swimming pool! After this we voted, waited as the votes were counted and welcomed the new prime minister of Staryland! We even met the mayor and had our picture taken with her. It was a great morning and we now have a much better understanding of democracy and the impact this has on our community.

Fractions

5th May 2023S Whitfield

Year Three have been learning about fractions. In order to investigate equivalent fractions we used fraction circles. By making 4/8 and 1/2 with the circles we could easily see that they are equivalent! We found lots of equivalent fractions.

Week 6- History Club

4th May 2023L Moore

This week in History Club, we found out about the Anglo-Saxons. We talked about the local monastic sites Jarrow and Monkwearmouth. We were surprised to discover that the earliest coloured glass in Britain was discovered here and dates back to the 7th century.
We then found out about the amazing site of Sutton Hoo and made our own Anglo-Saxon helmets.
