Year 3- The Twits play scripts

Year 3 have loved reading the story ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl. We also looked at a version of the story that had been adapted into a play script. We chose our favourite chapter from the Twits story and wrote it up as a play script.

After that we worked in  groups to act it out, one member of each group took on the role of the narrator while the other two had the less fortunate job of playing the disgusting Mr. and Mrs. Twit.

When we had finished rehearsing our version of the scene, we then had to perform to an audience of our classmates. We were given a Success Criteria of being able to speak clearly, be as expressive as possible, engage with our audience while trying not to read from our script too much. The final results, given the fact this was our first attempt, were fantastic! There are some definite future acting talents in year 3!

Y3 have enjoyed using function machines to learn our 4 X table. We used known facts from our 2 X table and doubled them to work out our 4 X table. We then learnt a chant to roll our 4 X table rapidly off our tongues!

Harton Rockstars are 11th in England

Once again, our Key Stage 2 pupils have taken part in the national Times Tables Rock Stars competition ‘England Rocks’. Our boys and girls have superseded their previous achievements and come 11th out of 4080 primary schools!! This is a masssive accomplishment and shows everyone’s dedication to learning their times tables.

Y6F came 27th out of 30,034 classes. Again, a massive achievement!

We are exceptional proud of all of pupils who took part and their amazing times tables knowledge. Superb results!

 

Harton Primary School Remembers

This week we have been learning about the importance of Remembrance day and why we celebrate it. We all created beautiful artwork that was displayed in the hall for everybody to see. After our special assembly, we held a 2 minute silence to honour and respect the memory of the all the men, women and animals who helped fight for our country.

Black History Week at Harton Primary

Around the world Black History is celebrated during Black History Month. This is a time set aside each year to celebrate the achievements of black men and women in the past and today.

We know that all people should be treated equally but sadly, this isn’t always the case, and many groups of people around the world still suffer as a result of discrimination. Thankfully, there are some amazing people who have done incredible things to fight for equality. Over the past few weeks, each year group has been learning about a different inspirational person.

Today we all joined together in assembly to share who we have been learning about.

Year 3 visit the Great North Museum

Year 3 visited the Great North Museum in Newcastle. We got to explore our ‘Rocks’ topic through their fantastic exhibits.

People often think rocks are boring but they don’t realise how amazing they are! Most rocks have been around for millions of years and seen so many things. Some rocks may have even once been a piece of mud on a dinosaurs foot! Isn’t that fascinating?

We investigated lots of different rocks and had to decide if they were metamorphic, sedimentary or igneous. Then we explored the museum looking at the amazing fossils and minerals they have there!

Our Stone Age Experience- Year 3

A special visitor called Rachel visited Year 3 to transport us back to what life was like in the Stone Age times. We learned how to light a fire using flint and a fire steel, just like they would have thousands of years ago. Back then, the hunter gathers had to source their own food, we handled lots of different tools and thought about how they would have been used. After that we made ancient bannock bread and cooked it over our open fire. It was delicious!

A hunter gather had to move around as the seasons changed to ensure they had food to eat, so our final task was to work in teams to create our own nomadic shelter. We had so much fun!

Among Us: fairly safe, or pretty sus? 👩‍🚀🚀 This scenario of spaceship crew members cooperating to complete tasks and uncover murderous alien imposters has garnered a sizeable and committed following with younger gamers 🎮

Though Among Us is presented in a (mainly) sanitised visual style, any children’s game which essentially foregrounds the concepts of deceit, betrayal and killing is always likely to cause some concerns. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide gets among it with Among Us.

Created in 2018 by a small indie studio that (at the time) had only four employees, Among Us has become one of the gaming world’s biggest breakout hits of recent years. In 2020, for example, it was the world’s most-downloaded mobile game. Its simplicity helped Among Us to resonate with younger players in particular: the game’s second largest audience slice is the 13–18 age bracket.

While the 7+ age rating, emphasis on teamwork and cartoonish, colourful graphics all suit a young fan-base, however, the game does carry more serious risks than betrayal by a team-mate or an untimely on-screen demise – with in-game purchases and possible contact from strangers on our #WakeUpWednesday guide’s list of hazards that trusted adults should bear in mind.

Exploring Artefacts in Year 3

We were so excited when Miss Whitehead told us she had a special delivery from a local museum, it was filled with artefacts from Prehistory! We investigated the different artefacts in groups, thinking about what it could be, what it is made from and which period of prehistory we think it came from. We made some amazing deductions and used everything we have been learning to come up with ideas. At the end of the lesson, Miss Whitehead taught us all about the artefacts, the one that surprised us the most was the fragment of a mammoth bone! We wondered why it was so smelly.

Year 3 get stitching!

Our D.T project for this half term is to create a Stone Age pouch. We have been learning that in the Stone Age, people made clothing by hunting animals and then using their coat/fur for clothing. We were amazed to learn that near the end of the Stone Age, the needle and thread were invented. They would make pouches and bags to carry tools and even decorate them with animal bones!

We started our project by undertaking research around a famous designer called Rachel Boston. She uses the Stone Age to inspire some of her designs.

This week, we looked at examples of running stitch, overstitch and cross stitch. We discussed the pros and cons of each type of stitching and what would be best for each part of our Stone Age pouch.  As our main task, we practised the running stitch and cross stitch, it was so much fun!
