Hoops4Health Finals at Vertu Arena

“When playing in the match I felt worried that the other team would win or score. When playing on the arena I felt nervous because the other team was over at our net all of the time. When watching the game I felt excited because it was a hard match and I wanted to know who would win. On the overall experience I felt happy that we had got so far but sad because we lost.” – Ria

On Friday the 17th of March, the Year 5 Hoops4Health finalists took part in a the finals at the Vertu Arena, before a Newcastle Eagles game.

They played against Forest View Primary School in front of their family (and some of the public) in the stands. They once again fought ferociously to a nil-nil draw, forcing a free-throw shoot out. However, unlike in the semis, Harton lost to a single basket – which resulting in them coming joint 3rd place with Cleadon Village.

 

“Playing in the match was really cool because people were watching and it was for the semi finals as well. Playing on the arena was harder because it was a bigger court. When watching the game, it was good because you got to chant a lot. The overall experience was really good even though we lost in the semi finals.” – Harley

The team enjoyed a free Newcastle Eagles basketball game with friends and family, and they got to once again go on the court for the medal ceremony.

“I felt quite nervous when playing the match. When we started playing it was ok I was quite confident then. When we were watching the game I loved it it was very interesting to watch and very exciting to experience it. Overall, IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!” – Ella

 

Year 2 RE Story Teller

We had a visit from Elizabth, who is a story teller, she told us all about The Easter Story from the bible. Christians believe that Jesus died on a cross then rose again.

Year 1 Trip to the Discovery Museum

This half term Year 1 have been learning about the toys Victorian children would play with and the materials they were made from.  We found Victorian Toys were made from wood, metal, glass, fabric and china, unlike our modern toys which are mostly plastic.

As part of our topic we visited the Discovery Museum in Newcastle, we were very excited!

We had a lesson in the classroom with Fran. She had lots of old toys hidden and we guessed what we though they were… a train, teddy bear, porcelain doll and a dog-bear (was it a dog or a bear!)

We had a great time exploring the museum!

Harton Rockstars 16th in England

Our Key Stage 2 pupils took part in the national Times Table Rock Stars ‘England Rocks’ competition last week. Amazingly, we came 16th out of 4000 schools across the whole country!

Especially well done to Y6F who came 53rd out of 29,000 classes, closely followed by Y5F who came 79th.

We are super proud of all our pupils who took part, showing how amazing they are at their multiplication facts. A fantastic achievement!

 

Reader of the Month- October 2022

Congratulations to our Reader’s of the Month for October.

This month the staff chose children who they had spotted working well with others in reading. For example, anyone who had been working well with reading partner’s, supporting friends with reading in school and having a generally great attitude to reading. Some children also made an outstanding contribution to our book swap event; bringing in lots of books to ensure everyone could take part.

Well done everyone! We are so proud of you.

Next month we will be looking out for children who show respect for our books and library spaces, who take care of books and return them to school regularly. Could this be you?

Black History Week in Year 5

For Black History Week, Year 5 studied Ruby Bridges.

Ruby Bridges was famous for being the first black student to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School. Even though segregation had been declared ‘unconstitutional’ by the Supreme Court in the USA, some people were still very angry at the idea of black and white people mixing, and Ruby attending the school led to lots of people protesting outside of the school, parents removing their children from the school, and only one teacher offering to teach Ruby.

We spent the week learning about what life was like during segregation, what Ruby’s first year at school was like, and what happened later in Ruby’s life.

Our digestive system

In Year 6 we have been learning all about the human body this half term as part of our unit of work Animals including Humans. We carried out an experiment to examine how the digestive system worked. A bag was used to represent the stomach which was then filled with a banana and some biscuits. Orange juice was then added to represent the acid in our stomachs and the children had a go at mushing it all up, just like the muscles in our stomach would do. We then passed this through a pair of tights which represented our intestines and looked at how the nutrients would be absorbed into the bloodstream. It was a bit messy but the children really enjoyed it.

 

Owl Visitor

In year 1, we are learning about owls. Stef came to visit and brought Braken the Barred owl and Jessie the Barn owl with her.

She told us all about owls and we wowed her with our great knowledge!

Reader of the Month – September 2022

I cannot believe we have already been back to school for a month! The children have wasted no time in impressing their teachers with their outstanding effort in Reading.

The children chosen for September have been able to choose a new book from our brand new selection to take home. We hope they enjoy reading them.
