Following on from last week’s lesson about material properties, we then explored different materials and tested their properties.
We tested 5 materials from the feely bags for: magnetism, hardness, flexability and transparency – which posed a question of materials being transparent or translucent. Some of the materials were translucent (such as cloth) but the investigation was looking at transparency, so they got a N (for no).
In science, we used feely-bags to describe materials based on their properties, so the rest of our group could guess what material we were feeling.
We’ve started learning all about how sounds are produced and how they travel. We loved making our own string telephones and testing them out. Some of us even tapped into other people’s conversations!
We have been learning about light in Year 3. This week we experimented with transparent, translucent and opaque materials to see if the light from a torch would pass through them or block the light. We then created our own windows using different materials and displayed them on our window to see when the sun shines on them if the light will travel through or be blocked. This week, in Year 3, we had a virtual visit from a Science Out-reach Co-Ordinator from Durham University. Our visitor answered lots of our fantastic questions and taught us lots of interesting facts about fossils and rocks. We even watched some videos of active volcanoes erupting!
This week we have been exploring winter. We investigated how ice changes in our hands. We had lots of fantastic frozen fun!
The children in Year 4 used their knowledge of electrical circuits to design, make and evaluate their own board games. As I’m sure you all agree, the games all look very fun! The children had a great time testing them out.
What a treat we had in Year 1 on Wednesday! We were visited by a range of wonderful animals to support our learning in Science.

We discussed their classification, what food they ate and Steph answered lots of our interesting questions so we could find out even more about the animals!
Today, year 3 enjoyed investigating the effects of frictions on different surfaces. We tested how far a toy car would travel on the following surfaces: carpet, whiteboard and wood. We predicted that the car would travel the furthest on the whiteboard because it is a smooth surface and it would travel the least furthest on the carpet because it is a rough surface. Our predications were correct! We found that the car travelled the furthest (154cm) on the whiteboard because there was lesson friction. The toy car did not move at all for the carpet because there was a lot of friction! We are so excited for our next Science investigation.
