STEM Week in Reception- Day 4

Today we continued to make fairground rides using our Lego. We found out about electric cars and how they work. Then we used our Lego to make electric cars and ramps for them to travel down. We used our six bricks to make a tower, balancing our Lego bricks carefully.

STEM Week In Year 2- Day 3

7th June 2023P Mullea

Today the children were set another exciting task to build a robot and use code to move it in different directions. The teams were challenged to direct their robot vehicle around the mat and travel on an energy journey from energy source to the consumer.

The next task was to work as a team and create a model for a better energy journey for their community. We investigated the local area and discussed how we could use renewable energy to innovate an energy consumer.

Here are some examples of our ideas:

An electric powered fire engine.

A fairground ride powered by wind turbine.

Replacing the coal from the Marine Park train with renewable power.

Today we have used our Lego to make fairground rides with moving parts. We have been investigating the energy story in our own community and finding out about the different jobs of people who work in the supply of energy. We had lots of fun making our own electrical items and powering them with our wind turbine!

Year 1 have had a busy week!

We have discovered energy sources, thought about how we store energy and about how we distribute energy.

Today we have been exploring moving rides, such as those you would find at the fair or in the park. How would our rides connect to the energy supply?

STEM Week Day 3 in Year 3!

7th June 2023C Whitehead

Today we developed our coding skills by adding a motor to our models. We followed instructions to build a house and coded it to have flashing lights and even sound! Next we built a car and designed a code that enabled us to navigate it around the mat making sure we didn’t collide with our other models.

LEGO on the move!

7th June 2023eclark

Today, we put our Lego building skills to the test as we used our knowledge of motors and coding to create a moving robot. We even managed to turn our robots into electric cars which we drove around the classroom.

In the afternoon, we worked hard to create our own motorised Lego designs. We worked in our teams to create prototypes. Some of us built and coded fairground rounds. We cannot wait to improve these further tomorrow.

Diving into coding

6th June 2023R Errington

Today Year 4 delved into things that use energy/ electricity in our homes and elsewhere in our community. We also started coding to make a merry-go-round move, programming a model to play different lights, and incorporating a motorised model into our carousel and carousel to get them to move in different directions.

The core values we demonstrated have been:

  • having an impact – applying what we learn to improve our world

Today we continued to use Lego to explore energy. We made power stations and kitchens to use the energy. We drew objects in our houses that use electricity and use the Lego to build some of the objects. We then had a challenge to use the Lego to build a bridge across the river.

STEM Week in Year 2 – Day 2

6th June 2023Rachel Wright

Today we started by learning about energy consumption. We built a carousel and then connected it our energy storage model that we made yesterday. We realeased the stored energy and powered the carousel. Next, we made a model and used the SPIKE app to send code to our model to make it move. We then explored changing the programme to make the model go faster or slower and  change direction. We also created a model with a light sensor! We have learnt so much already…and it’s only Tuesday!

STEM week in Y3 Day 2!

6th June 2023C Whitehead

Another great day of fun in our Lego League challenge! Today we thought about what examples of energy consumption are in our community. Then we worked in our teams to build a carousel by carefully following the instructions. We coded our model  so the motor allowed it to rotate, then we thought about our codes and changed it so the ride could spin in different directions and at different speeds. Our next task was to change the ride into a wind turbine. We worked together in teams to brainstorm our ideas and how we could maximize energy capture. By working together showing inclusion and innovation we were able to complete the task together!
