Dig School

Professor Carenza Lewis has launched an online Dig School. The programme offers free workshops for children aged 10 and over. The workshops are focused on archaeology and learning about the past. They will give children the opportunity to take part in activities and talks to help develop their understanding of the past in a new and exciting way.

VE Day Friday 8th May

Although we are unable to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day together, we would like you to mark the occasion at home with your families.

We would love to see a photograph of you joining the ‘Stay at Home Street Party’.

On Friday 8th May we would like you to make some bunting and decorate your house in red, white and blue. Then with your family you could have a picnic in your garden. Researching the Ancient Egyptians at home

Being at home hasn’t stopped Year 4 from working incredibly hard. They were given the task of researching different aspects of Ancient Egyptian history including their daily lives, their religious beliefs and the mummification process. Check out these fantastic examples of the posters and PowerPoints they produced! We are so proud of them!

 

Ancient Egyptians

Year 4 really enjoyed starting the topic of ‘Ancient Egyptians’. We looked at the hierarchy in Ancient Egyptian society, drew timelines and investigated artefacts. Can you work out what they were used for and who would have used them?

Art and Design in Years 4, 5 and 6

French artist Henri Matisse inspired us to ‘paint with scissors’ in Year 4. Year 6 were also creating their own version of Matisse’s ‘Beasts of the Sea’. We also looked at a ‘real’ painting copied from one of his earlier works ‘ Woman Reading’ 1920. Year 5 used their knowledge of The Ancient Greeks from their English and History lessons, to design a Greek pot calendar, and then made a pot from clay. The Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani had a particular style, and we replicated his style in our self portraits in Year 6. We have lots of talented artists too!

Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

Year 4 loved learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, particularly when we had visitors and went to Jarrow Hall during History Week earlier in the school year. We found the different artefacts from the Museum In A Box and Box of Delights fascinating to look at.

Year 3 have an amazing history week!

Year 3 got up to so much fun and learning during History week!

We had a visit from Doctor Bath, she came to teach us all about the Stone Age. We created a timeline that went from present day all the way back to the Stone Age times, it stretched right around our classroom! We then created cave painting using chalk and our fingers which was the only materials of that time. After that we looked at different artefacts and made predictions about what they would have been used for.

 

Later in the week,  Archaeosoup came to visit us to help us learn more about the Stone Age. Marc taught us what life would be like in the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic times and we were able to look and feel some artefacts from those times.

History Visitor

Reception enjoyed taking part in History Week. We had workshops with the staff from Newcastle Castle and learned all about castles. The children enjoyed looking at some artefacts and working out what they might have been used for. We also learned how to joust and made some medieval gingerbread.
