History

Black History Week in Year 1.

5th November 2021Ms C Smith

For black history week we have been learning about Martin Luther King. First we looked at why we celebrate black history week. We then discussed racism and how people used to be treated differently based on how they looked. To understand who Martin Luther King was, we watched videos and read facts about him to make our own fact file. At the end of the week we made our own ‘ I have a dream’ speech bubbles highlighting the importance of everyone being treated equally and fairly.

We also created some lovely ‘ with my own two hands’ art work.

This week we also made our poppies for Remembrance day. They are going to look amazing when we put them around the school.

Black History Week in Y6 – Nelson Mandela

5th November 2021D Fawkes

During Black History Week in school, Y6 have learned all about Nelson Mandela.

Did you know that Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa? He became a President after serving 27 years in prison. He was imprisoned for trying to end apartheid in South Africa which segregated white and black people and meant that white people had more rights than black people.

We have enjoyed researching and writing a biography about this very influential man.

Black History Week in Year 3

5th November 2021C Whitehead

Y3 have really enjoyed learning about black history this week! We know that all people should be treated equally but sadly, this isn’t always the case, and many groups of people around the world still suffer as a result of discrimination.

Thankfully, there are some amazing people who have done incredible things to fight for equality. This week we have been focusing on one of these people,  Rosa Parks.

We started the week by learning her story, we came across lots of new vocabulary such as segregation and civil rights so we created a glossary.

We then looked at Rosa Park’s most important life events and ordered them in chronological order. We then began to think about which was the most important event. When Rosa bravely refused to give up her seat on the bus, this was a small act that caused big changes. We decided this was her most important life event because this started this bus boycott that put an end to the segregation on buses.

To end the week we used drama to act out Rosa’s courage and bravery. We stepped inside the shoes of those involved in the bus incident and discussed how different people would have reacted when Rosa stood up for her rights. We compared this to how it would be different if this happened today.

Year 5 – Black History Week – Ruby Bridges

5th November 2021L Forster

For Black History Week, Year 5 have been looking into the life of Ruby Bridges – a woman who was the first African-American child to go to a desegregated school in Louisiana in 1960. She faced protests from the white American community and had to spend her first year of school in a classroom with only her teacher.

We discussed the events and situations that Ruby experienced when she went to school during this period of the Civil Rights Movement. The children then had to infer the feeling they think that Ruby felt during her childhood.

The children have spent the week researching different aspects of her life – including her early life; her school life during this time; and what she has achieved in her adult life. Using this research, the children have created their own presentations to show what they have learned about Ruby.

Anglo-Saxon Adventures

5th November 2021R Errington

Year 4 have loved learning about the Anglo-Saxons. We thought about how their religious beliefs changed over time and the different roles they had in society. We had great fun looking at the punishments for different crimes that were committed during that time. It was great to visit Jarrow Hall too. We looked at the farm and the village, thinking about what life was like then. We also made our own runes and participated in a battle!

Our Stone Age Experience

1st November 2021C Whitehead

A special visitor called Rachel visited Year 3 to transport us back to what life was like in the Stone Age times. We learnt how to light a fire using flint and a fire steel, just like they would have thousands of years ago. Back then, the hunter gathers had to source their own food, we handled lots of different tools and thought about how they would have been used. After that we made ancient bannock bread and cooked it over our open fire. It was delicious!

A hunter gather had to move around as the seasons changed to ensure they had food to eat, so our final task was to work in teams to create our own nomadic shelter. We had so much fun!

Petrospheres!

1st November 2021C Whitehead

Year 3 have been investigating an ancient artefact known as a petrosphere! Over 400 have been found by archaeologists. They are believed to be around 4 thousand years old and date to the late Neolithic or Stone Age times. Nobody knows exactly what they were used for but we made some great inferences based on what we already know about this time. After that, we used clay to create our own petrosphere. What do you think the petrosphere was used for?

The Ancient Egyptians

12th July 2021R Errington

We’ve loved learning about the Ancient Egyptians (especially the gory parts of mummification). We had a fantastic visit from Richard, That History Bloke, who told us loads of amazing facts. We’re also really enjoying reading Secrets of a Sun King, which is all about the mysteries of Tutankhamun!

Maya Podcasts

21st May 2021L Forster

After a 2 weeks of researching and writing a report on the Maya, the children then developed that report into an information podcast. Working in groups, they gave out roles to each other and wrote a script to record. Once recorded they edited their podcast to increase the volume of their speaking voices, and chose music for their theme – which they had to cut and alter the volume in order to hear the speaking voices.

We hope you enjoy!

That History Bloke visits Year 2

20th May 2021H Langley

That History Bloke came to visit to teach us about George Stephenson. First we played a game of True or False, then learned about what life was like for George Stephenson growing up, what he was like as an inventor and about mining during the Georgian era. We were able to make candles that miners would use down the mine and see some artefacts and objects from that time. We then used role play to learn about the locomotive competition that George Stephenson won with ‘The Rocket’ and were able to think about different people’s feelings about the railways expanding. Finally, we were able to sculpt our own locomotive using clay.
