South Tyneside Fire Brigade Visit

To conclude our ‘People who help us’ topic we have been learning about Firefighters and how they help us within the community.

The children know so much about firefighters they have even written their own information booklets about them.

Yesterday, they were shocked to see the firefighters from the South Tyneside Fire Brigade at our school.

The children enjoyed seeing the equipment in the fire engine and looking at their uniform. They even had the opportunity to sit inside the fire engine with their friends.

Canny donations all around!

In addition to counting the total number of cans received for each Canny Friday, our School Council members have also been busy recording the total number of donations received from each year group. School Council member Keira suggested this at our last meeting and the other children agreed that this would be an interesting idea. Year 3 are even going to analyse some of this data in their maths lessons next half term!

Last week, the Year 4 children helped to collect and count the cans. Thank you to everyone for your generous donations. A particular thanks go to the children of Y3R, who managed 33 cans, and to Nursery and Reception. In total, the children and parents from our Foundation Stage donated 46 cans for the South Tyneside Food Bank.

YRM’s Visit to Washington Wetlands Centre

As part of our curriculum and focus of ‘Understanding the World’, Reception visited the Washington Wetlands Centre. We looked at the many different Habitats animals live in, finding similarities and differences between them. We also looked for signs of spring around the Wetlands Centre. During our visit we got to have a try at Pond Dipping, Mini beast hunting and even saw the Centre’s family of Otters being fed. We had a great day!

A visit from the Police.

As part of our topic on ‘People who help us’, Reception had a visit from our local community police officers.

The children were excited to hear about the jobs police officers do. They loved exploring the police car and trying on some of their clothes.

YRL were excited to have the chicks visit our class. We have enjoyed watching them grow and can’t wait to hear more about them next half term.

Police Visit

Yesterday, as part of our ‘people who help us’ topic, we had a visit from three police officers. The children enjoyed learning about their job and how they help within the community. The children thought of some fantastic questions to ask about their jobs such as, why do police officers travel in helicopters? All of the children then got the chance to sit in the police car, turn on the blue lights and sirens! After, the children got dressed in police uniform which they really enjoyed. Even the teachers got involved!

Definitely a Canny Friday!

The Year 6 School Council members had a busy Friday afternoon as they collected and counted all of the cans and dried foods brought in for Canny Friday. They were amazed to find that we had received 56 more donations for the South Tyneside Food Bank than the week previous. Jake was particularly pleased as he discovered that we had even managed to collect tea, coffee, UHT milk and several pasta sauces. These were all items that Maureen told us were in short supply at the food bank.

Our current total for Canny Friday stands at 554 cans, jars and packets. We’re looking forward to the next one (on Friday 24th March) already.

YRE at Washington Wetland Centre!

The children had great fun on our school trip to Washington Wetland’s Centre. They learned about living things and their environment. The children took part in lots of activities throughout the day, such as pond dipping and a mini beast hunt in hollow wood. Our ‘I Spy’ sheets also helped us to identify other living things throughout the day such as birds, ducks, flamingos and otters! We are excited for our next school trip already.

Reception’s Special Visitors!

Reception have been learning about people who help us in the community.

They were so excited to find out that a nurse and paramedic would be visiting our classrooms. When they arrived they talked to the children about their jobs.

They explained how they help us at home and at hospital. Afterwards, they showed the children how to call for help in an emergency by ringing 999 and asking for an ambulance.

The children looked so shocked when an ambulance turned up outside of school after they made the phone call!

Wow! 249 cans so far!

Our School Council members have been carefully counting your cans of food. They were thrilled to find that our first ‘Canny Friday’ resulted in 249 cans being collected for the South Tyneside Food Bank.

We’re looking forward to our next Canny Friday (17^th March) already!
