Year 5 have completed a lot of work recently on Greek myths, particularly looking at Herakles and his twelve labours.
Each class was tasked with acting out one of Herakles’ labours. All groups worked together to produce a fantastic… and very dramatic performance!
Props were used and character’s lines were created by the children.
Y6 have learned all about Nelson Mandela during Black History Week and wrote biographies about this key figure.
Nelson Mandela was a politician and an activist and he was a key figure in ending ‘apartheid’ (where there were laws to keep Black and White people separated) in South Africa.
The children learned all about Nelson’s beliefs that everyone should be treated equally and we discussed our own viewpoints on this and how we too think everyone should be treat equally.
We also learned about how Nelson went from being imprisoned for 27 years for campaigning and protesting for equal rights to becoming South Africa’s first Black president.
Year 4 loved reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis this term. We explored ways to describe different characters as well as putting ourselves in the shoes of Lucy and Edmund. Check out Y4E rehearsing a conversation between Peter, Susan and Mr Beaver!

This school year has started with some fantastic reading achievements and we could not wait to celebrate our Readers of the month. Staff looked out for the children who go above and beyond to read in school and at home. Their effort in reading has not gone unnoticed and we are so proud of them.

This week we have been reading the story ‘Elmer’. Today in Art, we have been exploring colour mixing, using the primary colours to make other colours.
In Year 1 we are learning about owls. Today we had some special visitors. Stef brought two of her owls. Jessie the Barn Owl and Bracken the Bolivian Bard Owl. We found out lots of amazing facts.
Stef was very impressed with our questions.
We are reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo this half term in Y6.
When reading Chapter 4, the children discovered a lot of unfamiliar vocabulary. They spent a lesson identifying those words and then using the dictionary app on an iPad as well as dictionary books to find the definitions of words and then writing sentences of our own with them. The children also found antonyms and synonyms of each word.
In today’s world we know we can use technology to find a lot of information but we all recognised the importance of knowing how to use a dictionary book.
The children identified words such as ‘mellifluous‘, ‘impenetrable‘, ‘crescendo‘, ‘surreptitious‘.
We always want to improve on our vocabulary set and apply new words to our writing so we are looking forward to including such words in our future writing.
In Year 2, we have begun reading The Wolf’s Story. After reading a few pages, we thought about reasons why we should or should not trust the wolf. We worked in groups to talk about how the character was different in this story to Little Red Riding Hood and formed an debate for and against the wolf. We had lots of fun using our reasons to create a conscious alley activity.
In English, we are reading Little Red Riding Hood. To help recall the story, our task was to create our own story maps. We used actions to help us remember key events and were encouraged to use exciting vocabulary when retelling the story.
The children have used their non-chronological report about the Ancient Maya to create a podcast – demonstrating their speaking skills to show expression.
Working in groups, they decided on their roles (hosts, experts, professors, priests) and came up with a podcast name to suit the style of show.
After spending a lesson editing out (most of) their mistakes; adding music and sound effects; and altering the volume of different tracks of audio; the children completed their podcasts.
