Video: We would like you to begin by watching the video on Tally Charts – You looked at these in Y1 and in Y2 so you should be familiar with them.

Today we are going to draw inferences from details in a text. An inference is a deduction that is made based upon reasoning and it allows you to figure out information that may be missing in a text or picture. Texts sometimes describe how characters look or act and from that we can infer how they feel even if the text does explain that directly. Sometimes writers call this technique ‘show-not-tell’. Listen to your video lesson on your Google Classroom with Miss Whitehead where she will explain your task in detail.
Your Task!
Look at these ‘show not tell’ sentences taken from Beowulf. What does it tell us?
1.The king’s face was pale. His hand shook as he pointed.
2. Beowulf’s lip set into a grim line.
3. The men cheered and joked as dawn blazed across the sky.
4. Beowulf went to attack, but his legs felt suddenly heavy.
5. The Geat’s leader stepped forward.
Extension- Remember that this task doesn’t have to be completed, it’s just there if you’d like something extra!
Use the picture below to write your own show not tell sentences!
