Wow! Even more AR award winners! Mrs Fawkes is delighted to say she is struggling to keep up with them, there are so many!

What an amazing year we are having with reading achievements and it is wonderful to see our children so enthusiastic about reading!

Congratulations to James (Y5F), Jack (Y5F), Erin (Y5L), Mia (Y5L) and Conner (Y6F) who have become our latest Word Millionaires and to Bonnie (Y3W), Elizabeth (Y4C), Maizie (Y4C), Ethan (Y6F), Ryan (Y6F) and Alfie (Y6A) who are now Half Millionaires!

Rainforest Survival!

Y3 enjoyed a trek through Castle Eden forest focusing on similarities and differences between the tropical and UK forest – although at 26 degrees it was nearly as hot as a tropical forest!
Firstly we all went on a walk to look at lots of different trees, plants and woodland animals. We then moved onto a hunt for cards with different continents around the world and matched them up with different rainforests and climate descriptions. We finally moved deeper into the forest where we learnt life skills on survival in the rainforest! We enjoyed building our own dens and learning how to peg and tie ropes and sticks together! We had an amazing day!

Hadrian’s Wall at Harton

This year Hadrian’s Wall celebrates it’s 1900th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, we have created our very own ‘Hadrian’s Wall at Harton’. Every class from Nursery to Year 6, have been learning about Hadrian’s Wall. The children used what they had discovered to write a fact about the wall on a brick which we used to make our enormous wall!

The Secret Garden – Writing Workshop

Northern Saints

This week Year 3 have had a special visit from Elizabeth who came to teach us even more about the Northern Saints. First we discussed what a saint is, including what a saint is not! We used objects to represent this. After that Elizabeth taught us the stories of St Oswald, St Aidan, St Hilda and St Bede. We learned the important lessons that these saints taught us. Finally, we used ink and a writing quill to practise writing in Latin. We had to take our time just like the monks! They had to be good writers to be chosen to write out the bible.

Leaders Award Champions

We are very proud of all of the children who took part in the Primary Engineer Leader’s Award competition. They had to design an invention which would solve a problem they had identified. Over 30,000 children across the country took part and 14 of our children had their work displayed at the Discover Museum. Amelie, from year 4, received the ‘highly commended’ status for her robotic headset design which would allow people to carry out dangerous jobs from a safe location. Oliver and Asmin, also from year 4, were the overall winners for year 4 in the north east of England! Oliver designed the Litter Drone 3000 which sensed and collected rubbish, including waste that was hidden. Asmin designed a Glass Eye which would allow those people who are blind or have poor eyesight to see again. What phenomenal engineers we have at Harton!

Year 3’s Jubilee T-Shirt Decorating

Year 3 enjoyed decorating their t-shirts with their adults to celebrate the upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We had so much fun creating our own designs- our t-shirts included lots of crowns, jewels, Union Jack flags, stamps and even the Queen’s Corgi! We gave our adults a special treat by singing a song we have been learning in school called ‘Here’s to the Queen’- it sounded fantastic! Take a look at our creative jubilee designs…

Volcanoes!

Year 3 have been enjoying their Geography topic ‘Extreme Earth’. We have been learning lots about volcanoes and how they erupt, how they are formed and which countries they are located in. We then decided to create our own volcano sculpture using clay. As a class, we discussed the different colours and textures we would need to represent the lava, magma and volcanic ash. Extreme Earthquakes and Volcanoes!

This week Y3 enjoyed a drama workshop with One Day Create all about Earthquakes and Volcanoes!
We explored the key aspects of the physical geography in the context of volcanoes and earthquakes. We examined current natural disasters and significant historical incidents though quizzes and being intrigued by the descriptions of different earthquakes and volcanoes around the world. We acted out and discussed what life would be like if natural disaster occurred in our area and expressed our ideas and feelings through voice, movement, role play and drama!

Y3 have been learning about the different types of volcanoes and how active volcanoes erupt. We learnt about how the earth builds up pressure which affects the Earth’s crust, so that magma can sometimes erupt through it. We then took our learning outside and created our own class volcano to watch how when pressure builds it causes an eruption.
