Feliz Navidad and Merry Christmas!

In Year 3 and 4 we have been connecting with other cultures. We found out that some Spanish customs and traditions at Christmas time are similar to our own. Then we made cards and baubles to reflect what our local area can look like in Winter. We will be exchanging these with a school in Spain we have connections with.

Mr Donnelly visited Wellbeing Club this week and taught the group some greetings in Spanish. Pupils played a game to reinforce the language. They will use these new skills to communicate with Spanish pupils.

 

School Council Election 2018

We have been learning about the democratic process in school and put this into practise when voting for this year’s class representatives.

Some of our Year 6 pupils took on the role of clerks and counters and all of our voters enjoyed participating.

Our new School Council members will have their first meeting on Thursday. An announcement will follow on the results of our first meeting.

Wellbeing Club

Wellbeing Club has been meeting once a week. We like to listen to relaxing music while we colour in our mindfulness colouring books. Mrs Napier has been our VIP visitor this half term. She gave all club members a diary to take home to record the day’s events  or to record how we have been feeling. We made a group poem this week.

   

Welcome to our new Sports Leaders

Mr Steadman and Miss Smith have been training up our new Sports Leaders.

They will be teaching our younger children some new games, and joining in with their games too.

Some Year 1 children were on hand to help give them some practise in using their leadership skills.

A postcard from Kenya

Miss Cook came back to visit us in Year 1 after her month long visit to Kenya. She had been a volunteer teacher at a school there and wanted to share details of her fantastic experience with us. She saw zebras, elephants, giraffes, lions and hippos while on a safari there. At break times, the pupils ate cooked sweet potato or corn on the cob. Miss Cook brought a Kenyan worry doll and a Masai warrior robe to show us. Lots of our pupils seem keen on going on travel adventures just like Miss Cook.

Year 1 ‘visits’ Switzerland on Europe Day.

We were excited to come to school in our Europe Day T-shirts. Each year group came to assembly wearing their T-shirts inspired by the country they had chosen to learn about,  including Belgium, France and Scotland.

Year 1 learnt lots of facts about Switzerland, looked at maps about its position in Europe, made Swiss flags, tried Swiss foods, completed word searches, and mixed some paint tints to paint like the artist Paul Klee.

‘Observing’ Shabbat in Year 1.

Our RE topic on Jewish faith has taught us a lot about belief and traditions.

Our Jewish visitor from Newcastle Synagogue brought it to life for us.

We listened to a story about Abraham, found out about writing and speaking Hebrew, and observed Alan demonstrating what happens during a traditional Shabbat Friday night dinner.

In preparation for his visit, we had decorated our own Kiddish cup, and recreated eating challah bread and blackcurrant juice. We listened to traditional Jewish music.
