Three of our Year 6 School Council members have taken up their new roles as Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer. They are doing a great job so far. Points on the agenda today were allocating fundraising money to charities and related projects in school, voting on our design-a-sign allotment competition, and feedback from our recent Eco-warrior Day and Anti-Bullying Week. There has also been a suggestion to start a new club, run in part by some School Council members. Watch this space!

There was a party-like atmosphere at the annual FAB Awards in Jarrow Focus theatre on Wednesday. It was the 10th anniversary of the awards, and everyone had a ‘fab’ time!.
Harton’s Super Safety Squad helped to present the awards, and a Y6 School Council member and one of our Y6 Playground Buddies showed the guests our Anti-Bullying work. Harton Primary School had 2 entries – one for the Role Model Award, and one for the Main Award.
Our pupils were incredibly eloquent, and as usual, excellent role models. We were delighted with our certificates and awards, and parents came along to share the occasion.
We learnt about environmental issues during Eco Warrior Day. The School Council wanted to raise awareness about local and global changes, and sent a letter to parents detailing activities for the day. A special Eco Warrior assembly introduced the day, prompting us to reflect on positive steps we already take to help care for the planet. We made pledge badges, pledging to do at least one other thing that would be of benefit. Some children made Meat-Free Friday posters to promote a special school lunch. A competition was held for pupils to design a sign for our allotment, emphasising the health, mindfulness and environmental benefits of gardening. Everyone enjoyed reading stories like ‘Nelson’s Dangerous Dive’, and taking part in a litter pick around the school grounds. Money raised will be divided between conservation charities and buying a composter for our school allotment. A whole school vote decided that we will be sponsoring an Amur leopard and giant panda through the WWF, because they are such endangered species.
Our newly elected School Council have been chosen and are ready for their first assignment. The calibre of all candidates was very high yet again. Our Year 6 tellers did an excellent job in assisting the ‘electorate’, and in counting up the votes. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience!
We like to keep our environment clean and tidy at Harton Primary, so every Wednesday our School Council help Mrs Parker, our school caretaker. This week it was the turn of Year 1. They enjoyed the experience, and did a great job!
We started celebrating Easter this week with a range of activities. All classes decorated boiled eggs and some year groups enjoyed a visit from the Storyteller. She retold the Easter Week Story, and the children reflected on events.
There was a lot of chocolate on display in assembly! The winners of the Egg Decorating Competition were awarded with their prizes, and the winners of the sustainably sourced Easter Egg Chocolate Raffle were announced. The raffle supports Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to charities suggested by our School Council.

Our KS1 School Council’s winning poem ‘Perfectly No-one’ has been included in a newly published book featuring winners of the Premier League Writing Stars competition. A great book to use in our PSHE lessons and Health and Wellbeing Week.

She retold the Easter Story from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday, and the children reflected on events. Y3C began writing to their new French pen pals. They wrote letters and made Easter cards for pupils in Noisy le sec. We should be receiving their May celebration cards soon.
