Environmental Awareness Evidence
Today we learned that energy is any source that creates a change in matter. We learned about the two different types of energy renewable and non-renewable. We then researched sources of renewable energy and thought about where we can find them in our community before moving on to creating models of consumers of energy and energy sources.
Today we explored renewable energy and looked at the different energy sources in our community. We then had lots of fun using ‘Steam Park’ and ‘Superpowered’ LEGO to build a range of energy based objects.

Today we started our STEM week in year 1.
The aim of the week is to introduce the children to the fundamentals of STEM while working together to solve fun challenges and building models using LEGO DUPLO bricks.
In year 1, we are looking at energy, where it comes from and how we use it.
Today the children explored the STEAM Park pack and discussed different sources of energy in our community. We then worked in teams to make our own wind turbine using the building card.
Year 4 loved their visit to Wrekenton Waste and Recycle Centre. We explored the site and gained a greater understanding of how different materials are reused or recycled. We were also fascinated to learn about the Energy From Waste plant at Teeside. During our trip, we discussed what each of our different coloured bins were for and we even brought a battery bin to school. It’s important that we dispose of batteries properly and they should never be put in household waste. We also used our science knowledge to sort different materials at the centre into solids, liquids and gases.
In science, we’ve been learning about different habitats. We’ve found out which organisms are found there and we thought about why they live in certain conditions. We’ve also been discussing the impact that humans have on different habitats and what we can do to help. We had a great time on our trip to Washington Wetlands. Pond dipping was one of our favourite activities – we found loads of invertebrates!
The School Council have worked really hard to spread our ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ message this year and they were thrilled to learn that we will be trialling refillable glue sticks from September.
Council members were the first to get their hands on these new glue sticks and they had lots of fun filling them with glue. They found the whole process super easy and were thrilled to learn that this would drastically reduce the amount of plastic used by our school.
We are delighted that Tilly in year 5 was chosen as the winner for the World Water Day poetry competition. Her poem raised awareness of the impact that pollution is having on our planet as well as the importance of recycling.

L for let’s keep cleaning our community

U for underground dirt and muck is going into the pipes and into the rivers
T for the more water wasted the less for dying animals

N for never waste water and don’t put your rubbish in the sea. Put it in a bin. Start caring.
When we arrived at Scotswood Gardens, we gathered under the shelter and discussed the different parts of the life cycle of a flowering plant. We had to match up the definitions by finding our partners, then we put ourselves in order.
After that, we went into the woods and used the natural materials we could find to make models of flowering plants and we labelled the parts.
At Scotswood Garden, they have beehives, so we played True or False with facts about bees. Did you know bees pollinate a lot of the food we eat? We need them to help us grow our crops!
After that, we had a chance to explore the gardens, including the ponds, beehives, willow dome and vegetable gardens. We all had a sticky bee to try and collect pollen from the flowers. It was so peaceful.
After lunch, we had a chance to do some different activities in the woods: den-building using branches and tarpaulins, potion-making in the herb garden, tie-dye using natural materials, and we all got a chance to make a newspaper plant-pot and plant our own sunflower or bean.
We had such a fun day and learnt so much about plants!
Recently, some of the children in year 3 took part in a litter pick. They explored our school surroundings to collect litter and make it a cleaner and safer environment. The children had so much fun and informed the rest of the class the importance of putting our litter in the bin. Check out our pictures to see how much fun we got up to with Toffee bear!
Loads of children designed a poster to show what the world would be like in 50 years time as part of the council’s climate change initiative. Check out the 10 finalists whose work will go on display in the Customs House in November.
