An Eggcellent Day in YRW!!!

YRW hosted an ‘Easter Stay and Play’ session.  First, we welcomed our family members and thanked them for attending.  Then, we sang some Easter songs.  Next, we decorated eggs in various colours and designs.  We had lots of fun and we all had an eggcellent time!!!  What do you think of our final creations?

This half term we have been researching seasonal vegetables and the benefits of seasonal eating! Last week we tasted various vegetables and picked our favourites! Today we’ve had lots of fun making a delicious seasonal salad!

Y4E’s excellent electrical cards

21st December 2023R Errington

In Design and Technology this half term, Year 4 used their knowledge of electricity to investigate, design, make and evaluate electrical greeting cards. They used copper tape, 3V lithium batteries (CR2032), LEDs and sellotape to make the circuits. They thought carefully about who they were making the card for and even used tissue paper to create 3D effects on their finished products. Check out Y4E’s finished products!

Science & DT Afternoon at Harton Academy

On Wednesday afternoon, Y6D had the opportunity to go to Harton Academy to take part in some STEM activities. In Design & Technology, we used a CAD (computer aided design) program to create Christmas tree ornaments made from acrylic. In science, we looked at electricity and then made Christmas card with a light (LED) and a circuit. The children had a fun afternoon. Many thanks to Ms Parkin and the Harton staff for having us.

Year 2 – Let’s make a wrap!

As part of our DT topic, Year 2 were asked to create a healthy option to be added to the lunch menu. We had to make sure we included the different food groups from ‘The Eat Well Plate’ and followed our design to safely and hygienically prepare a simple dish without heat.

Asda community Champions came in to help us make our wraps and make sure we followed our design briefs.

Taste Testing in Year 2

Year 2 have been asked to create a new healthy wrap that could be added to the school lunch menu. Our wrap must include foods from different food groups to help children have a balanced diet. Before we design our own wrap we tested different food combinations to see which one we liked best.

Year 3 get stitching!

22nd September 2023C Whitehead

Our D.T project for this half term is to create a Stone Age pouch. We have been learning that in the Stone Age, people made clothing by hunting animals and then using their coat/fur for clothing. We were amazed to learn that near the end of the Stone Age, the needle and thread were invented. They would make pouches and bags to carry tools and even decorate them with animal bones!

We started our project by undertaking research around a famous designer called Rachel Boston. She uses the Stone Age to inspire some of her designs.

This week, we looked at examples of running stitch, overstitch and cross stitch. We discussed the pros and cons of each type of stitching and what would be best for each part of our Stone Age pouch.  As our main task, we practised the running stitch and cross stitch, it was so much fun!

Technology Tom’s visit to year 4

During Design and Technology, we have been investigating methods used to transport water. In Ancient Egypt (and in some places today) shadufs were used to transport water from rivers to fields in order to water crops. Technology Tom helped us to make water wheels, which we were able to test out. We were great problem solvers too!

Today we had a visit from Technology Tom. He showed us the effect of air on different moving objects. We then made our own flying fish!

It was a very special day for Technology Tom as it was the last time he will be visiting a school. THANK YOU for a wonderful day Tom!

Lighthouses

Year 1 have been working hard on their lighthouse designs and structures.

We have have been thinking carefully about the materials to make the structure, also about different methods to decorate the main structure, such as paper using crayons, pens and pencils, a collage of different materials.

We have also thought about challenges we might come across.

We think they went really well!
