Year 4 Easter activities at St Lawrence’s Church

As part of the Easter unit in RE this half term, Year 4 had the opportunity to visit St Lawrence’s Church and take part in Ash Wednesday, Lent and Easter related activities.

“We used oil and palm leaves to make a cross on our forehead. When Christians do this they are forgiven for any sins they have done.” Sienna

“We put ribbons on a rope and wrote down our hopes and dreams on butterflies.” Luka

“We shared bread and thought about Jesus sharing bread with his disciples at the last supper.” James

“We wrote down things that we are thankful for onto crosses and then stuck them to the wall.” Isla

The children really enjoyed their visit and we’d just like to say a big thank Adam and all of the volunteers at St Lawrence’s for organising and hosting the activities.

Kielder Observatory

To round off our work on Earth, Sun and Moon, we had a visit from Kielder Observatory.

  

We looked discussed the different types of light and created UV bracelets.

We then had to create landers to safely transport an egg to the ground – similar to the space capsule.

To start the afternoon, we worked together to order the planets correctly, before examining different types of rock – including rocks, some that were once asteroids and even rocks from the moon.

 

Remembrance Day Parade

Well done and thank you to our fabulous Year 5 mini police who represented the school beautifully at their first deployment at the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday.
A special mention for Asmin, who volunteered to march in the parade alongside one of the officers. Asmin was asked to lay the wreath at the cenataph on behalf of Northumbria Police, which she did smartly and professionally, bowing her head afterwards. The officers commented on how smart and professional the whole team were.
What a credit to the school and their families!

We remember at Harton

Today we held our annual Remembrance Day commemoration. All across the school we have been learning about Remembrance Day. Each year group created wonderful Remembrance Day art. At 11 am we held our 2 minute silence to honour and respect the memory of the all those who have fought for our country.

 

Mini Police

It was a pleasure to introduce our new Year 5 mini police cohort to the Inspector and other colleagues from Northumbria Police on Thursday.

They will be busy over the year with a range of duties, including reporting back to their peers about what they have learned in the sessions with police officers about keeping safe online, healthy relationships and water safety, as well as representing the school and the force at local events such as the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday 13th November.

We know they’ll have a lot of fun and do a great job!

Hinduism Workshop

On Wednesday, Year-5 took part in a Hinduism workshop as part of our RE topic this half term. The children learned about Hindu beliefs; heard some Hindu stories; looked at artefacts; discussed Hindu gods; learned a little about karma and meditation; learned to dance using Indian Dandiya sticks; and dressed up in some authentic Hindu clothing.

School Council election time

The School Council have such an important job role to play at Harton and the children have loved electing their new representatives this week. Each class patiently waited their turn to use the voting booths before carefully marking their choice on their ballot papers. Existing Council members even helped by counting up the votes.

We can’t wait to find out who our new School Council are!

 

Harton Primary Mini-Police

Our wonderful Year 5 mini-police were nominated for The Shining Stars Award at the Citizens in Policing Awards 2022 which were held at The Sage. Joseph and Maxwell attended the awards to represent all of our mini-police. It was a great night and the boys were presented with a goody bag each and met lots of important people, including the High Sheriffs of Tyne and Wear. They were temporarily knighted by one of them and held the title ‘Sir’ for 24 hours. The boys brought back certificates to present to the other mini-police. All of the mini-police have done a great job this year and we are very proud of them.

Reduce, reuse and refill? Refillable glue sticks come to Harton

The School Council have worked really hard to spread our ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ message this year and they were thrilled to learn that we will be trialling refillable glue sticks from September.

Council members were the first to get their hands on these new glue sticks and they had lots of fun filling them with glue. They found the whole process super easy and were thrilled to learn that this would drastically reduce the amount of plastic used by our school.

A busy term in Y2M!

The children in Y2M have been working extremely hard this half term and the staff are all so impressed with their excellent effort, especially when completing the KS1 SATS. To celebrate the end of the SATS we had a little extra ‘golden’ morning of fun, we got to enjoy the sunshine and play outside, the children were even treated to an ice pop!

 

 

We had lots of fun after SATS preparing for our Jubilee celebrations. We loved welcoming our parents into class to help us decorate our Jubilee T-shirts. A huge thank you to everyone for attending and for all your hard work, we have some very talented parents and children of course! We were so excited to share our special song for The Queen with you as well. We hope you enjoyed it.
