Primary Engineer Leaders Award 2023

Once again, the children of Harton Primary School have blown the judges of the Primary Engineer Leaders Award away with their innovative ideas to answer the question ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ Over 30 children from our school were shortlisted for the final round of judging and Bonnie was awarded winner of the north east of England! She had her award presented to her at Sunderland University. We are incredibly proud of all of the children who took part and can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with next year!

STEM week Y5 Day 1

Today, we have been building models for our Lego League robot table. We built a high five, an energy storage, a dinosaur, a power plant, a water dam, an oil platform, a car, a wind turbine, a toy factory and an oil truck. It was hard, and a few mistakes were made, but when we found it difficult we didn’t give up even when some of us had to start all over again. Some of us even finished quick enough to start our research on energy! But, that’s mainly for tomorrow, along with coding. The four energy sources we are doing today are: yellow (which consists of oil platform, oil truck, and car); orange (which consists of dinosaur, power plant and high five); blue (which consists of water dam, toy factory and water storage) and finally white (which consists of storage, wind turbine and tv).

We are looking forward to tomorrow where we will be researching more energy sources and we will begin coding our robot.

Mayan reports

In Year 5 the children have been using their knowledge of the Mayans to write reports in English.

The children have used their research and a range of layout devices such as headings, subheadings, bullet points, images and captions to compose some very informative reports.

The children are also going to use their non-chronological reports to help them to script and record their own podcasts all about the Mayans!

Reader of the Month- May

May has been a really busy month in school but the children have still found time to impress staff with their excellent reading.

This month we were on the look out for children who have a great attitude to reading and make an extra effort with their home reading.

A special mention to Lucas in Year 1 who not only has a great attitude to reading he helps his little sister too by teaching her how to read!

Well done to Sienna in Year 4 who reading extra books at home as well as her home readers!

Lastly to Jack in Year 6 who reads so regularly at home he has become a word millionaire!

5B Scotswood Garden

We visited Scotswood Community Garden in Newcastle to investigate how plants reproduce. First, we learned about the parts of the flower which are important for pollination and reproduction. Our challenge was to use natural objects to recreate the parts of the flower and label our model.

Next, we became pollen hunters, visiting the bee hives and learning about the importance of bees and why to protect them.

After lunch, our main activity was to make pots out of newspaper and then planting seeds which would eventually encourage bees to our gardens to help plants reproduce. We also made natural potions, explored the gardens finding interesting insects and made dens using sticks and leaves. Overall, a fantastic day learning about plant reproduction.

Bolognese sauce

In Design and Technology this half term, the children have been looking at, comparing and designing their own bolognese sauce.

They searched for different recipes on the internet, and worked in a group to devise their own with ingredients they would like and how to make a healthy.

In preparation for cooking, the children were tasked with practicing at home chopping food, so they had some experience of what was to come.

On Monday they were tasked with making their sauce using slow cookers in the classroom. A range of ingredients they used included: onions, celery, sweetcorn, potatoes, garlic and a wide range of herbs.

 

Some ingredients were not chopped prior to putting in the pots, so the children adapted to use (cleaned) tools from around the classroom to solve the problem.

Y5L’s Day at Scotswood Garden

Y5L had a fantastic day at Scotswood Garden.

We started out by talking about the process of reproduction in plants:

Then we made a model flower using what we could find around the garden and labelled the parts:

Since we had talked about bees being pollinators, we became pollinators ourselves. We had sticky bees on our fingers which we used to collect pollen while exploring the garden. We got to see the vegetable patch, the pond, the flower garden and the beehives. There are around 300,000 bees in the hives at Scotswood Garden!

After lunch, we had a chance to do some activities around the garden:

Minibeast hunting

We had so much fun!

 

3D shape investigation

Today we investigated the properties of 3D shapes.

We looked at the different 3D shapes (including cube, cuboid, tetrahedron, triangular prism and cylinder) and identified how many faces, edges and vertices each shape has.

Well done to our latest batch of Half Millionaires and Word Millionaires! More fantastic achievements and they really show our children’s love of reading.

Congratulations to Erin and Mia in Year 6 who are our latest Word Millionaires.

Mia is really enjoying reading the Wizard of Once series by Cressida Cowell. Mia says they’re very good books, they’re not too simple and she says they challenge her as a reader which she enjoys.

Erin is a huge fan of David Walliams’  books and she picked Robodog as her Millionaire prize. Erin says they’re not too difficult to read, she can read them so quickly because she enjoys them so much and she says they’re very funny.
