WORLD BOOK DAY 2023

World Book Day 2023

We have loved to see the children in their wonderful outfits, celebrating their favourite books and authors for World Book Day. All of the children have completed a range of book related activities in school.

Ella in Year 6 said she enjoys World Book Day. “I love reading and it’s fun to be the characters you love for the day”.

Sadie in Year 4 said she enjoys World Book Day because she loves reading and it’s a day all about celebrating reading.

Year 3 History Club

2nd March 2023L Moore

Today was the first after school History club for Year 3.

We began by talking about how we find out about the past. The children used their historical skills to look at pictures of artefacts and say what they thought they were, how they were used and what time period they were from.

We then thought about the role of archaeologists and the children drew their own archaeologist, thinking about their clothing and the equipment they would need.

Year 3 and 4 enjoyed discussing how people can keep themselves safe and happy online. We also shared what we like about using the internet and what we’d like to change about it.

Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are longer stories written and illustrated in the style of a comic, combining a sequence of engaging visual elements that drive the plot, coupled with short pockets of text in the form of captions and dialogue. The format has seen a burst in popularity in recent years and we have recently ordered a wealth of new graphic novels for both of our Accelerated Reader libraries for our children to enjoy in school and at home.

Internet Safety

15th February 2023C Whitehead

This half term Year 3  have been learning all about keeping ourselves safe online. For our lesson this week, we worked in groups to create a ‘beat cyber bullying’ poster and then thought about two different scenarios that we could come across. We brainstormed our ideas of how we would feel about each scenario and what we could do help solve the problem of cyber bullying.

Year 3 visit Arbeia!

15th February 2023C Whitehead

We have been learning lots about the Romans so we were very excited to visit our local Roman Fort in South Shields. We took a tour around the fort, we learned that it was key military supply base to other forts along Hadrian’s wall. We visited the soldier’s barrack block, it was dark and cold inside their rooms! After that we went into the very impressive commanding officer’s house and spent some time in the Summer dining room. We really got a feel to what life would have been like for a soldier in Roman Britain!

 

 

In the afternoon, we conducted our own archaeological investigations, looking at sources that had been found at Arbeia. We had to deduce what we thought the artefact was!

Reader of the Month January 2023

8th February 2023P Mullea

This month the staff were looking out for children who have made great progress in their reading but also who work well with others.

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 the children take part in partner work when reading stories. They help friends read tricky words and have shown themselves to be great team players.

In years 3, 4, 5 and 6 staff were really pleased to see how the children can support each other with reading and celebrate others achievements. They have made AMAZING progress too!

A special mention to Tyler in Y4 who has made 18months progress in his AR reading age in the last half term and to Maxwell In Y6 who has made 2 years and 4 months progress!

What an achievement!

We are so proud of you all and love to see so many of you enjoying reading. We hope you enjoy your prizes.

Next Month teachers will be keeping a close eye on the children who use Accelerated Reader, to see how well they perform in quizes and improve their reading. Staff will choose a Reader of the Month who shows a great commitment and attitude to their reading, using AR and when sharing books.

Year 3 investigate shadows!

1st February 2023C Whitehead

In partners, we investigated how shadows behave. We used the playground to move around in different ways to see how our shadows change size. We noticed that the closer we moved towards the light source, the bigger our shadow became. This is because our body was blocking more of the light. As we moved further away from the light source, the smaller our shadow became. This is because our body was blocking less of the light.

Year 3 Roman Workshop

We were thrilled to have That History Bloke visit us to help us learn more about the Romans. Richard taught us what life would be like in the Roman period and in the Roman Army. We looked at and handled some artefacts from those times . We were able to dress up like a Roman, write in Latin and play some games that would have been played. We had so much fun, take a look!

Y3 at St Lawrence’s Church

Earlier this month, Year 3 had a visit to St Lawrence’s Church to take part in some Advent themed activities in the run up to Christmas, which links well with the topic we have been studying in RE. We’d like to thank Adam the Churchwarden and his wonderful volunteers for welcoming us to the church and the lovely activities they led.
