School Council visit to Jarrow Town Hall

On Tuesday 17th January, our School Council were invited to Jarrow Town Hall to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside.

After viewing the outside of the building and looking for clues regarding its age, the children enjoyed moving inside to visit the Jarrow Crusade exhibition. They learnt that the (council organised) 300 mile trek to London occurred 80 years previous.

Next, our School Council moved into the Parlour where they were able to handle the Mayor’s mace and ceremonial chains. They were amazed at the weight of these, not to mention their value.

Finally, the children explored the Council Chamber. They learnt about local democracy and were granted special permission to sit in the Mayor’s chair, before signing a special book to show that they had been.

London’s Burning! London’s Burning!

Year 2 have had a great time learning about the Great Fire of London. They’ve been showing off their fantastic knowledge of the events which started in Pudding Lane on Sunday 2nd September 1666 to their teachers, parents and even the fire brigade who come to visit us to teach us about fire safety!

Year 2 Performance – Pirates v Mermaids

I’m sure our Year 2 parents will agree that their performances on Wednesday 6th July were amazing with everyone getting involved in the drama and songs.  And who doesn’t love dressing up as a pirate, mermaid…or parrot!

Road to Rio workshop – Y2 and Y3

Year 2 and 3 have had a fantastic time learning about the whole ceremony and values surrounding the Olympic Games, by participating in a dance workshop. Zubaidah Saebu from Education Group, asked each class chose a country to represent from a choice of USA, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Mexico and Ghana. Each class took part in the opening ceremony where pairs of children were chosen to be flag bearers, and had some statements to read out about about their particular country, and the values they aspire to. After every individual dance workshop had been completed, there was a closing ceremony where each country’s dance was shared and and celebrated.

 

 

Happy 90th Birthday!

On the 10th June 2016, Y2 had a brilliant day helping Queen Elizabeth to celebrate her special birthday. We designed and made our own crowns to wear at our very own garden party. We found out lots of interesting information and wrote a book about the Queen. We sang songs, played party games and even had ice-cream! Y2R would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Napier for organising such a great day!

Our Community

Year 2 have been finding out about communities. Miss Wilkinson and Jeff from ‘Young Enterprise’ have helped us find out what a community is.

Year 2 Irish Dancing

All the children in Year 2 have been learning Irish Dancing as part of their P.E. curriculum.

A Taste of Mexico

This half term Year Two have been leaning all about Mexico.  We have learned lots of facts and compared Mexico with South Shields.

In Art we even made paper mache masks and decorated them.

 Today we have tasted Mexican foods such as sour cream dip, tomato salsa and Guacamole along with Doritos and Taco shells. We enjoyed the sour cream dip, the Salsa, the Doritos.  We didn’t really enjoy guacamole as it tasted like vegetables!
