Y2L were one of the lucky winners of a competition to design a milkshake. As our prize, we go to visit Embleton Hall Dairy Farm to find out how milk gets from the cow to the cartons we drink every day in school. We had a session with Animal Encounters, a tour of the farm’s fields and cow sheds to complete an activity trail, saw the milking robots milking cows, visited the nursery to see the calves and visited the dairy’s production plant to see the milk getting put into cartons! We had such an amazing day and learnt so much.
As part of our Science topic this half term, Y2M visited South Shields coastline and explored the rock pools, which are unique habitats. We identified different living things that live there and discussed why they are suited to their habitat. We talked about how rock pool habitats provide the basic needs for different kinds of animals and plants that live there, and how they depend on each other.
We had lots of fun and only got a little bit wet!
Children in Year 2 from across South Tyneside were invited to enter a competition to design a milkshake. We were the lucky winners and today Y2W visited Emblton Dairy Farm to find out how milk gets from the cow to the cartons we drink every day in school. We had a session with Animal Encounters, a tour of the farm’s fields and cow sheds, saw the milking robots milking cows, visited the nursery to see the calves and visited the dairy’s production plant to see the milk getting put into cartons! We had such an amazing day and learnt so much…even if we did get a little bit wet!

We are learning about The Great Fire of London which is a significant event in history. Today, we were history detectives and looked at different historical sources to find clues about the fire. We used paintings, sketches, maps and diary entries from the time to find out where, when and how the fire started and then wrote a summary of what we had discovered. We did a great job and found out lots about this key event from the past.
This half term, we will be painting a piece of artwork inspired by the paintings of The Great fire of London. Before we paint our artwork, we need to learn about and understand colour. We looked at paintings of The Great Fire of London and the different colours used. We saw that lots of orange, yellow and red were used for the fire and blue, green and purple were used for the buildings, river and people. We learnt the difference between warm colours (red, orange and yellow) and cool colours (green, blue and purple). We then found out about primary colours and how we could mix two primary colours to make secondary colours. Now, we know and understand which colours to use and how to make them ready for our painting.
Today we prepared for our Team Event. We thought about what questions people may ask us e.g. Why did you create your model. How did you use the core values? How does the poster show your team journey. We worked as a team so that we were all confident in sharing our learning and celebrating our success. The Event went really well and everyone was impressed with our innovative ideas.
We were extremely happy to receive our well deserved ‘build your own’ medal, lanyard and certificate.
Well done Year 2!
Today we used coding to make either the motor or light function on our models and tested the programmes to ensure the code did what we wanted it to do.
Then, we worked together with our teams to create a poster to show our learning journey this week. We needed to make sure we including the headings explore, create, test, share, core values and team journey. We each completed a section and put them together to make visual appealing posters about our teams ideas and creations. Team work really does make the dream work!
Today the children were set another exciting task to build a robot and use code to move it in different directions. The teams were challenged to direct their robot vehicle around the mat and travel on an energy journey from energy source to the consumer.
The next task was to work as a team and create a model for a better energy journey for their community. We investigated the local area and discussed how we could use renewable energy to innovate an energy consumer.
Here are some examples of our ideas:
An electric powered fire engine.
A fairground ride powered by wind turbine.
Replacing the coal from the Marine Park train with renewable power.
Today we started by learning about energy consumption. We built a carousel and then connected it our energy storage model that we made yesterday. We realeased the stored energy and powered the carousel. Next, we made a model and used the SPIKE app to send code to our model to make it move. We then explored changing the programme to make the model go faster or slower and change direction. We also created a model with a light sensor! We have learnt so much already…and it’s only Tuesday!
