This half term Year 1 have been following directions in Geography. We enjoyed working outside and around our school grounds to learn more about using a map. We looked at the points of a compass and practised finding North. We then played games to help us remember different directions and had to identify different symbols used on a map.
Y3 enjoyed a trek through Castle Eden forest focusing on similarities and differences between the tropical and UK forest – although at 26 degrees it was nearly as hot as a tropical forest!
Firstly we all went on a walk to look at lots of different trees, plants and woodland animals. We then moved onto a hunt for cards with different continents around the world and matched them up with different rainforests and climate descriptions. We finally moved deeper into the forest where we learnt life skills on survival in the rainforest! We enjoyed building our own dens and learning how to peg and tie ropes and sticks together! We had an amazing day!
Year 3 have been enjoying their Geography topic ‘Extreme Earth’. We have been learning lots about volcanoes and how they erupt, how they are formed and which countries they are located in. We then decided to create our own volcano sculpture using clay. As a class, we discussed the different colours and textures we would need to represent the lava, magma and volcanic ash. This week Y3 enjoyed a drama workshop with One Day Create all about Earthquakes and Volcanoes!
We explored the key aspects of the physical geography in the context of volcanoes and earthquakes. We examined current natural disasters and significant historical incidents though quizzes and being intrigued by the descriptions of different earthquakes and volcanoes around the world. We acted out and discussed what life would be like if natural disaster occurred in our area and expressed our ideas and feelings through voice, movement, role play and drama!
Over the past couple of weeks it has been Harton’s Teachers and Support Staff’s turn to dive into extending our geography skills! We have all learnt lots of new map work activities and created a school orienteering course that we will be able to use in our future lessons! We had lots of fun and would like to thank Alice and the OASES team for delivering such engaging training!
Y3 have been learning about the different types of volcanoes and how active volcanoes erupt. We learnt about how the earth builds up pressure which affects the Earth’s crust, so that magma can sometimes erupt through it. We then took our learning outside and created our own class volcano to watch how when pressure builds it causes an eruption.
Y3 had so much for today looking at the different layers of the Earth. We created our own Earth to show all of the layers. We created the inner core then covered it with the Earths outer core, mantle then finally the Earth’s crust. We then compared the layers of the Earth to a peach. We looked at the inside of a peach and imagined the peach’s stone was the Earth’s core, the surrounding soft bit of the peach is like the Earth’s mantle filled with magna and finally the skin is like the Earth’s crust.
In year 4, we’ve been developing our map reading skills to explore places around the world. We can identify the equator, the prime meridian as well as lines of longitude and latitude. We investigated places found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.

Y3 enjoyed a walk up to the top of Cleadon Hills as part of our current Geography Topic. We looked at what local landmarks we could see from the very top – we were able to see as far as Penshaw monument! In the distance we could also spy the Northern Spire Bridge, the pier and lots of our coastline including Souter lighthouse! We noticed that the higher we walked the windier it was but the sights were very clear.
In Y6 this half term we are learning all about rivers. We have been using UK atlases and World atlases to find rivers. We have used the index and the located the rivers using coordinates, identifying the river sources, tributaries and the river mouth.
